Wink Tasting through the nose

Boy, I tried this last night with a Padron 2000 and I thought my nose would never quite burning. I don't see how some people can do this. The only way it works for me is if I blow ~ 80% of the smoke out of my mouth and then take part of the remaining 20% thorugh my nose.

Don't get me wrong, the Padron 2000 is one of my favorate smokes, but WOW, that baby burned. It's not only that cigar either, pretty much all of the ones I smoke will do this.

Is it something I need to get used to, or will I grow into this? I've seen some people pretty much blow the whole draw through thier nose and can't figure out how they can do that.

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated. I do believe that much of the taste is sensed through the nose.

Re: Tasting through the nose

"Rolling" the smoke out of your nose allows the smoke to hit the taste buds at the back of your tounge, so you taste more. as far as the burn goes, you'll get used to it. I remember the first time I did it, thought my eyes were gonna pop out of my head. Try practicing with more mild cigars first.

Re: Tasting through the nose

This will likely be a very individualistic thing. Certainly I think you will get better at the process and you will likely grow into it. Even at your example of 20% thru the nose...there is a big difference bewteen that amount of smoke over the course of 5-10 seconds vs 1 second. I think some of the first puffs of a cigar can seem harshest thru the nose. Maybe try for now not exhaling a steady stream thru the nose. Instead just little 1 second "puffs". This might help get your schnoz aclimated.

Both...I believe nose smoking is absolutely an essential part when picking out cigar flavors. There is nothing wrong with your 80/20 ratio either. Keep practicing and take your time.

Re: Tasting through the nose

I would suggest starting very slowly, maybe only try exhaling through the nose once or twice over the course of the entire cigar. Also, go with a light to medium bodied smoke, and try to avoid doing it after you get into the last third.

Key thing is to take your time and be patient. You aren't going to be able to nose exhale perfectly without discomfort overnight.

Re: Tasting through the nose

The only thing I use my nose for is for smelling the unlit bouquet of the cigar. I have tried many methods in the past, and I have found this to not be enjoyable. I have accidently done this before, and found it extremely difficult to remove the smoke from my sinuses.

Re: Tasting through the nose

You'll find what works best for you. I've been smoking for years and I can't imagine NOT tasting through my nose.

Like you, I exhale 80% of the smoke and then exhale the remaining 20% through my nose.

Don't push yourself, start slow by only "nosing" 5%-10% of the smoke. It doesn't take much to get the full experience.

Re: Tasting through the nose

I let a little of the smoke out through my nose as I'm exhaling. That way there is some clean breath behind it. Some cigars are harsh this way. I found the Padrons not to be.

Stick to milder smokes for snorking(nose exhaling) in the beginning. I dont enjoy a lot of snorking when I am smoking stronger stuff like a Litto or JdN. But the flavor nuances from a CC are something to savor.

It took me months to get the Nose Exhale down. I think it is just something you have to work at over time, but when you get it down, there is no better way to taste a cigar IMO.

Re: Tasting through the nose

I've been trying to 'Snork' for months now without success. The kicker is my wife will walk over to me, ask what I'm smoking then proceed to 'snork' it! She'll say something like...oooh, can you taste the cocoa in it? NO I CAN'T!! LOL

Bingo. I love Illusione, but damn, thats a stinger at times to snork. Like Bobarian said about, to snork a CC is divine! But even a CC can sting a little depending on the stick, even sticks from the same box.

I myself are still perfecting it. I do wake up the next morning a tad stuffy, which I don't like.

I believe the term is "Snorking" and I must say I love doing it every few puffs. My advice would be to let out about 70-80% of the smoke and snork out the rest. That will help reduce some of the burn and also let you enjoy more of the flavor. Some cigar that are less spicy can be fully exhaled through the nose.

Re: Tasting through the nose

Another way to get a bit of nose flavor (and my preferred method) without getting a ton of burn is to only let it touch the tip fo your nose/nostrils. Do this sort of like a french inhale (without the inhaling). I just open my mouth with all the smoke in it, and sort of "scoop" it out into the air with my jaw. It should touch your nose and give you a nice sense of the flavors.
