I found my Mr. Heater was rather uncomfortable in really cold weather, as the heat is TOO directional. If I get too close, burn up....too far way I freeze.

Plenty hot, no smoke and a lot less trouble than starting a fire.

I have found this the most direct heat. You don't have to sit quite as close. I have tried everything from those 6 foot dome heaters which did nothing at all ( I took it back imediately) to the dome table heater. Nothing even came close to my cheap propane heater like the one in Hermit's post.

Re: Fire pits, chimnea's, outdoor heating options

I use the propane directional thing in my garden shed over the winter months here.

I can't imagine anything working well enough in open air to keep my nose happy enough to smoke outdoors with the temp less than 40 or so. I would LOVE to be wrong there though, sitting outdoor with some type of fire would kick butt! Maybe a bit of a pain building a fire every time you wanna have a cigar (nightly here).

I had one of the chimneas, earth/clay variety and it didn't do enough for sure and as has been said, broke down eventually

Personally I'm a big fan of chimneas. Where I work we sell them like crazy and everyone that buys one raves about it. They look great and add a touch of something extra to wherever you're deciding to put it. Also they're confined and there's not much mess to clean up.

I love my chiminea. It is very relaxing and does put out directional heat.

This is what I have used for probably 7 years. On my second one, they are horses! Put out great heat in ALL directions, can play with fire also.

Re: Fire pits, chimnea's, outdoor heating options

The people I work for have a GAS/WOOD pit. They use a gas grill type thing to light the wood, when it gets going they turn the gas off. Kinda cool, because you can start with wet wood in any weather situation. One problem they do have is this: they forget to turn the gas off and they burn a whole propane tank before they notice it. Once the fire gets going its hard to notice the blue gas flames.

But it also takes the fun out of using kindling and paper, which I like to do.

Gentlemen, go to the trusty Cabela's and order the Deluxe Alaknak II tent! It has a wood stove for heat. I use mine for hunting and in the winter time the boys and I use it in the backyard to play poker and smoke cigars. It works out great!

I have 2 tabletop propane heaters I bought a while back at Home Depot. They're about 3 feet high. I put one on either side of the long table on the back deck & that way everyone gets a little...warmth.

Re: Fire pits, chimnea's, outdoor heating options

I built a fire pit out back using the stacker type stones that you can get at any Home Depot or Lowes. I built mine in kind of a "D" shape with the back being straight. I will try and take some pics this weekend. It works great and it didn't cost too much to build. We have a woods buffer between us and a farm and we have a hill in the backyard so I put it on the edge of the hill overlooking the woods, so most nights sitting out there it's real quiet and relaxing. Plenty of heat but keep in mind I usually have 6-8ft flames shooting out of it. This is what the pavers/stacker stones look like.

I originally bought a Luminarium; a $500 "smokeless" firepit that took a special fuel. It sucked ass, gave it to my sister, where she barely every uses it.

I then went out and bought a $100 firepit I use constantly. I love smoking
a cigar by the fire. Lesson learned.

That's very similar to one I saw this weekend while at a BBQ. They had it set-up very close to the way you have yours set-up except it was filled with lava rocks and had lots of flames coming out from underneath them. Extremely warm and could be adjusted remotely. It was pretty cool!
