Hygrometer Calibration Problem?

I did do a search for this but I couldn't find alot of information. What was there was mostly about how to do the salt test.

Well I have two hygrometers, both analog. The larger one came with the humi and has always read at about 70% as it should. I picked up a tiny hygrometer a couple weeks ago to put in a travel humi I'm making. Till the travel humi actually gets made I was leaving it in my desktop humi. Everything was fine and both were reading 70%. I filled up the humidifier with more solution when I noticed that the humidity levels were slowly going down. Then all the sudden the larger hygrometer shot right up to 80% while the smaller one stayed at near 70%. I figured oh it's probably just because I had refilled the humidifier and the larger hygrometer is closer to the humidifier. I opened the humi for a bit to let out the excess humidity and closed it back up. I've been checking the humi regurarly and the two hygrometers have been consistently different. So last night I tried the salt test. Twenty-four hours later the smaller hygrometer reads 73% and the larger one reads about 80%. I'm thinking the larger one is screwed and from what I can tell there's no way to adjust it. Any reason for it to suddenly go out of whack? Any suggestions on what to do next?

Yes, I'm looking at some digital hygrometers on the net.

Thanks!

I can only suggest an digital hygrometer. I like the HygroSet Adjustable. Got mine from Taboo when they were $14.99 as a Daily Deal along with an order.

I have an analog, and and it is all over the place. Raraely accurate. It has an adjustment screw, but still isn't consistent. It is just for looks.

Yeah, same thing happens with my analog hygrometer. It's a piece of sh!t. I've salted, adjusted and the thing just doesn't work. I broke down and went digital. What's nice too, about the digitial, is that it reads temperature as well. And mine is slim enough to move from my regular 50-count humi to the 8-count travel humi.

Re: Hygrometer Calibration Problem?

Until you get a digital one just make note of how far it is off and take that into account when you are checking it.

Not all analog hygros are bad. I had one that came with my first humidor that I used for 6 years and each time I calibrated it was never off more than 3 percent. I am betting it is a "they don't make them like they used to" deal.

Re: Hygrometer Calibration Problem?

go with digital, analog is rarely reliable... i had a similar situation with my analog. i was calibrating and i just couldnt get it to settle at the right point, it was way under target mark.

switched to digital and worked like a charm!

good luck
