cigar ratings

Anyone else here think the 100 point cigar rating system seems a bit off.

I mean you never really see a cigar lower than an 82. Seems more like a 20 point system with everyone spoted 80 points.

Re: cigar ratings

yeah i think it is too detailed, with to much weight on apearance or pre-light aroma, and not enough weight put simply on if it tasted good, and was it a good burning/drawing smoke. who cares if the ash stays on for 10 inches, and yes i know that ash is an indication of good long fillers and good construction, but so is taste and smokability...

I assume you are talking about CA's ratings. If so, I think pretty much everyone here thinks they are anyway. Ever notice that some of the cigars that advertise the most in that mag gets good ratings? Hmmm.

Re: cigar ratings

I don't pay a whole lot of attention to cigar ratings. I smoke what I like and not what a magazine ratings says. They are usually biased to their advertisers. I may use them as a source of what may turn out to be a good cigar, but often find myself differing with their opinion. Everyone has different pallettes and tastes. One mans 95 is another mans 59 and vice-versa.

Re: cigar ratings

it is especially offputting when they describe a cigar as being sour or tasting of dirt, and then give it an 81. then you read the scale and it means above average. don't know about you, but dirt is somewhere below average on my scale!

Couldn't agree more. Did you happen to notice that the RP Decade got a 95 and the shortly after Rocky got a big spread in the mag. Hmmmmmm!
That's a decent cigar but I don't think it's a 95. Do you think it's a 95 because I don't think it's a 95...

Re: cigar ratings

Totally agree, I think it's silly. I mean, for example how do you get 93 vs. 92?? It's just too many digits. I think a 10 point scale would suffice. "Wow, this cigar was a 9!" Or... "Well I think think this one was a 4" - simple and efficient. I've seen the same thing with reviews that described aweful tastes yet rate at 84! I mean, why an 84 if you think it tasted like dirt and armadillo dung?

Eh, this is the reason why I'm just buying one or two of each brand to test them out and make up my own mind. But... I have asked on here what some peoples favorite brands are and it's reassuring when you see so many repeats of a certain brand - such as Oliva. So, with such recommendations I buy some to try. No "what do you rate brand xxxx on a scale of 1 -100?"

Re: cigar ratings

I think that cigar ratings are like wine ratings in that they have little bearing on what I actually like.

Re: cigar ratings

That's what my friends in here are for. I trust your opinions 10 fold to what I read in a magazine rating.

Exactly my thoughts on ratings too! When I hit the B&M I buy cigar(s) that I haven't tried yet based on a.) name recognition b.) what I've heard here on CS. I always buy two of each new stick - if I like it the other one gets put back for a trade or PIF and if I don't like it the first time around I smoke the second one a day or two later to see if it's any different - two strikes and that cigar is done for me.

But I mainly base my purchases at this point (still a cigar noob) off the plain, everyday language reviews here on CS and ignore the high-falutin' reviews in the mags (they have nice cigar p0rn though! ).

Re: cigar ratings

I put a lot more stock in what I read here. Nobody here is paid to say anything good about a cigar, and nobody is trying to please advertisers. All you have to do is read the ad copy in the Cigars International catalog (which I enjoy reading, but isn't exactly an objective source of information on individual brands) to see that it's largely a sales pitch. I also don't need the opinions of people who get paid to smoke expensive cigars and believe they have much more sophisticated palates than mine to tell me what I should be buying. It's about what I like and what I don't. period.
