Smoking Bans

Politicans are hyprocritical spinless twats who have no souls. I realized this when Governor Rowland signed into law CT's smoking. Even though he's a cigar smoker, he signed yet another asinine anti-somking bill. May be the tobacco retailers and resturant owners of Connecticut should've paid for some work to be done on his house to in order for him to veto the legislation.

Now New Jersey, is the latest in a series of coummunities to pass a smoking ban. Though not as restrictive as bans in other places it's a ban nonetheless. Guess what? As I figured certain places in the casinos will still allow you to smoke. I guess casino employees aren't entitled to a "smoke free work enviroment."

I'm ambivalent towards smoking bans. Part me of is says, "Good for these idiot resturant and bar owners. Your telling me I can't smoke a cigar among other tobacco users? I hope your business does suffer." Then the libertarian side of my persona says, "Wait. Who is the government to tell a business owner he can't carter to a smoking clientale?" As far as I'm concerned smoking bans contradictory to the core philosophies of both major parties. I thought Repulicans were for allowing business to run with minimal government interference, and while the Democracts will give you the merits of allowing a 12 yr old to get an abortion without parental notification or consent, will tell me I can't smoke a cigar with other adults in a bar or resturant.

I oftened wonder why the resturant, bar, and club owners just rolled over when these bills are under consideration. Where is the opposition? Where are those demanding accomendation? Anyway, I've figured out that politicans vote for these smoking bans do so because the bans don't effect them. After all they still have their country clubs, and "Grand Havana Clubs," to smoke in. And as in the case of NYC Mayor Bloomberg, if enough high rollers get together in a public place to smoke, whose going to stop them?

And this is is the height of the hyprocrisy. One day a legislator is going to figure out that the state can generate revenue by issuing smoking licenses. When this happens, smoking bans will go faster than crack on the 1st of the month.

Finally, can somebody tell what is wrong with idea and why nobody has thought of it yet? Have business owners install venhiliation systems by "x" date. If you don't have a system install you by default become a non-smoking business. If you have the system, you post a decal in your window that will tell the pulbic your a smoke friendly establishment. This allows the marketplace to decide whether or not if it wants to patronize this particular buisness. But like my mother used to say, "that's too much like right."

Re: Smoking Bans

I guess we're all in the "minority" on this, though it scares me when legislation is enacted to disallow a minority. Seems to me that a simple and cheap way to go about it would be to require any/all advertising for, and signage on, an establishment to declare either "Smoke-Free" or "Smokey."

Then again, that would be far too simple for our government... I mean, look at the freakin' tax codes!

Okay... I've vented... I feel better now!

Re: Smoking Bans

The one Bar I goto that is Cigar friendly (cigars allowed anywhere in the place) has 6 smoke eaters on the main floor and another 4 in a basment lounge. If they can do it why can't other places do the same.

Its actually a nicer place to go and hang out when a place has a good ventilation system. As long as they still allow smoking in places that have those in place its not so bad. When they don't even allow that, that would piss me off like crazy.

Being able to sit with some BOTLs and smoke cigars and shoot the breeze and still see eachother without stale smoke all around though is pretty sweet.

I'll be out of town this weekend, going to the Minnesota Craft Brewers Winterfest beer tasting in St Paul, but the following Saturday works for me.

PM me.

Part of the opposition is right here on this forum and the scores of other tabacco related boards. Problem is that we aren't nearly as vocal and militant as the PC Police.

Re: Smoking Bans

Just be glad you dont live in Seattle. No smoking in any business (including specific cigar bars and cigar shops), AND no smoking within 25 feet of a door, window, or ventilation duct.

Re: Smoking Bans

It keeps getting worse. Some people can't even smoke in their own home.

"Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. is taking its campaign to stamp out smoking among its workers to an unusual length: It's threatening to fire smokers beginning next fall."

Re: Smoking Bans

It drives me nuts to, but around me it is only the county that I live in and the next cities to the west. So every time I want to go out to eat I drive out of the county and eat there. I have not eaten in a restaurant in St Paul since they banned smoking.

Re: Smoking Bans

Smokers still comprise 20% of the voting population. If a la the NRA just 10% of the smokers financially supported organized opposition to smoking bans, and if just 10% of the financial supporters were proactive in fighting smoking bans there would be no smoking bans. Over the past several months I have seen participants on this board bitch and moan about smoking bans but have never heard anyone, other than myself, disclose measures they have taken to fight smoking bans. If you just sit there and allow yourselves be dumped on by lying, sanctimonious organizations such as ASH, GASP, Smoke-Free America, the American Cancer Society, ad infinitum, and refuse to fight back, then you get what you deserve.........., SMOKING BANS...
