Cooler of choice for a coolerdor?

fellow G's,

I am tired of battling heat/humidity issues with my 4 humidors. Seems that I need more insulation and better sealing have to go the coolerdor route.
Hey, more storage for me without breaking the bank.

Main question here is which brands do you prefer in respect to SEALING TIGHT and THICK WALLS?

I figure these 2 aspects will do the trick along with placing them in the coolest spot in a house that hits the 90's here in Hawai'i. No Air con

thanks

Re: Cooler of choice for a coolerdor?

I picked up a 75qt Rubbermaid at Wally World with wheels for 50 dollars a couple of months ago. It holds the temp/humidity perfectly. I open it a couple times a week to get some new air in there.

I prefer my rubbermaid because it has an actual hinge closure. I don't want the top to separate after being opened enough times.

Re: Cooler of choice for a coolerdor?

I used to use a Coleman , worked just fine , eventually my collection out grew it so I moved up to an Igloo(which I voted for). A couple nice things about the Igloo is that it has 2 latches and nice flat spaces inside the lid for mounting humidifiers and Hygrometers . Another nice feature that is a bit of a coincidence is that the cedar trays from Bargainhumidors.com fit perfectly across the little ledge that is molded into the inside of the cooler . Hope this helps a bit .

I think it's a waste of money to get a five day ice holder.
Ya aint' gonna put ice in it. It just reduces the interior volume.

Re: Cooler of choice for a coolerdor?

I was just looking at a Coleman Extreme Marine 150-qt at Wally the other day, based on recommendations I saw on here. The price was just a hair under $100, which I thought was a little high for an "end-of-season" price, but to be honest, I wasn't really watching the prices earlier in the year, so that may have been a decent discount for my area. It has the aforementioned slots you can use for shelves. I'm naturally cheap. If it had been $60-70, I probably would have jumped on it, but if $98 is the low end, that's getting dangerously close to the Vino sale price that Target had a few months ago. I think those were $149-ish. I'm generally in Wally's every couple of weeks anyway, so I'll keep an eye on them and see if they come down a little. My two humis are both pretty full right now, but I don't have any immediate need for extra storage. I have two bundles of trash-freebies that are not in anything at all, except the cello wrapper, but I'm in no hurry to smoke them anyway. If they're as nasty as I suspect, I doubt that I'll ever smoke more than one or two of them, ever. Dunk them in kerosene and then melted parafin wax and use them for campfire starters, maybe. I can stay in wait-watch-shop mode for a little while.

I agree with this piece of advise. I just retired one of our camping coolers for this exact reason. One of the "hinges" (just a flexible piece of plastic) broke after being opened & closed umpteen thousand times. Personally I think it will serve as a coolerdor, and I'll hold onto it for now in case I decide I want a second coolerdor. But if I were going to buy a new cooler, I'd definitely get one with real hinges.

Re: Cooler of choice for a coolerdor?

Rubbermaid 150 QT.... Sams Club. 59.95.
4 drink holders in the top. BIG.
I searched and debated for a long time, this was the best bang for the buck, in my humblest opinion.
A link to the item online, anyway.

Living in Northern California without a basement, where outside temps reach and sustain 110° temps for weeks at a time while the humidity is often in the teens and sometimes lower during those summer months I find the extra insulation an advantage. Due to the cost of cooling my home during those months I prefer to drop a blue ice pack or two into the cooler rather than cool the house. I guess it depends on the environmental conditions as to whether there is value in the extra insulation.

BTW I paid $75 for my 165 QT @ Costco.

Thumbs up Re: Cooler of choice for a coolerdor?

Didn't vote because I don't currently use a cooler for this purpose. But thanks for this thread, it's good info for when I am forced to replace my 19 bottle Vinotemp, unless Target has another killer sale...
