Padron 1964 Anni HON/NIC

I recently ordered a box on Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo cigars. When I received them, I was shocked to see that the box indicated the cigars were made in Honduras. All of my other 1964s were made in Nicaragua. I did a little research and found that the 1964 Anni cigars ARE made in both countries.

I have yet to smoke any of the Honduran Exclusivos. I'm wondering if anyone has experience smoking the 1964s from BOTH countries and whether there are any differences? I believe that the tobaccos used in making the cigars are the same. The construction looks identical.

I believe that while they are rolled in both Nicaragua and Honduras all Padron tobacco is Nicaraguan.

Well, that is what they have claimed forever, but a fairly recent article let the cat out of the bag on them LOL.

What article is that? I received an email from Jorge stating they are simply ROLLED in Honduras, not that they have Honduran tobacco. They remain Nicaraguan Puros. . .

I'd be interested to read this article. Could you post a link or an excerpt? I'm a big fan of the 1964's. If something is fishy about the Honduran rolled variety, I'd like to know.

Thanks.

Re: Padron 1964 Anni HON/NIC

Sorry it took so long to respond. The article does not seperate between rolling facilities or regular line Padron, anni's or 26's, but Padron has always claimed to my knowledge that all their cigars were nicaraguan puros. Article is in Cigar Magazine summer 2005 issue (Quigley's on the cover) pg. 84

"Sadly, this bias against Mexican cigars has led numerous cigarmakers to hide the origin of their wrappers, which, in turn, devalues the worth of the Mexican tobacco industry in the eyes of consumers. For example, Nicaragua's much-heralded Padron Cigar is one of Turrents' largest customers for its maduro San Andres Negro wrappers."

Well,

I would not be surprised to hear that Padron uses Mexican wrapper on its regular and K series. If any guess is to be made on the basis of cosmetic consistency alone, then those two lines would be it. If the basis is volume, then I'm even more sure that's where they're going. These maduro wrappers do even remotely resemble the wrappers on the 1964 or 1926 maddies at all. Not even close.

Wilkey

Re: Padron 1964 Anni HON/NIC

The PAM 64 is an awesome smoke, whatever the size, regardless of where the wrapper originates. My only concern is whether the blend differs between those rolled in Honduras and Nicaragua. I think the concensus is that the content of the cigar, from wrapper to filler, is the same.

Re: Padron 1964 Anni HON/NIC

The only thing that concerns me is that in the latest JR Cigars catalog, they showcase the new Camacho Negro line as a knock-off of the Anniversary. The wrappers on these sticks look very much like the PAMs. And they are Mexican origin.

Re: Padron 1964 Anni HON/NIC

Okay y'all, I'll save the day.

The scoop:

Cigar Aficionado, December 2005 (with Antonio Banderas on the cover)
An Interview With Jose Orlando Padron by James SUCKling
Article starts on page 257

On page 264:
Q: Why don't you ever use tobacco from other countries?
A: I have tried tobacco from Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, and from many countries. We have tried them out. I tried various seeds too.

Q: But haven't Padron cigars been considered Nicaraguan for a while now?
A: Yes nowadays it is. We have used 2 percent Mexican tobacco but we haven't like the results.

Don't y'all just love me?

*Cue Music*

Scene pans to SuperT, flying through the air. He lands with a commanding thud.

SuperT stands before his fellow CS cigar loving compadres to deliver the answer they are all yearning for:

SuperT - "Jose Orlando Padron states that Padrons are all still PUROS. My work here is done!"

SuperT takes a slight squat, splits his bright blue leotard in the crotch, blushes slightly and soars off into the sky.

Fade to black, credits roll.

So who is lying?

1. "I'm selling Mexican wrappers to Padron".

2. "Padron doesn't use Mexican wrappers".

Something ain't clicking here...

Don't worry. Honduras/Nicaragua is akin to North Carolina/South Carolina, or somthing to that affect.
