Here are some of the first cigars I liked when starting out (pls note, this was before I discovered the Cuban Monte #2, which is still my favorite stogie on the planet):

Arturo Fuente Double Chateau
Onyx Reserve #2 Bellisco
Punch After Dinner
Macanudo Crystal Cafe (much better than Hyde Park)
CAO Gold

If you don't have a lot of money (like me), I suggest trying JR Alternatives from www.jrcigars.com. They are "imitation" blends made in Nicaragua that sell for about $1.25 apiece. They are not super-premium smokes like Padron 1964 or Opus X, but in many cases, I find them to be as good (or sometimes even better) than their name-brand counterparts.

Re: Newbie looking for advice

Advice:

1. Take Svillekid up on his offer.

2. Carlos Torano "casa torano"

3. K hansotia Sympony simply delicious. a creamy buttery smoothness with a nice sweet spice. a little pricy so this would be a milder mans Padron 1964 or 1926. worth a try.

4. Perdomo Champagne. the profile i would describe would sound like the above symphony...but the taste is different.

Re: Newbie looking for advice

I would suggest go to your local Cigar Shop (when they aren't busy) and ask the owner. Tell him what you like, where you are at, etc... He will make suggestions. Monte's here in Albuquerque (once they saw I was actually going to buy something) will walk around the humidor with me pointing out ones I might enjoy, and then they leave me to my decision. Now I actually walk in and say "I've got a $50 burning a hole in my pocket" and we go in and pick out 7-10 different cigars together.

For me the actual cigar is 80% of the fun, the other 20% is the fellowship that cigar smokers seem to have. That is why this is the only discussion site I visit, and I visit it often.

To this point I've enjoyed the Hyde Parks and am curious what some might recommend in a light to mild bodied for someone who's just getting their feet wet.

Respectfully Submitted

Re: Newbie looking for advice

Among others, the Tierra Del Sol is both cheap and a fairly flavorful milder stick.
