Bad Experience with Rocky Patel Vintage 1992

I bought a box of Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Robustos about a month ago. The cigars seemed fine upon initial inspection after opening the box. I attempted to smoke one after storing the Robusto in my humi for a couple of days. The draw on the cigar was extremely loose. I couldn't really taste anything other than the flavor of coal in my mouth.

I have attempted to smoke two other sticks since then with the latest being today. Again, the draw was way too loose, like sucking through a straw.

Can anyone tell me if this is how the RP 92 series normally smokes or if something is wrong with my box of cigars? I'm speculating that the cigars were kept outside a humi for quite some time before my B&M got ahold of them.

I've read nothing but good things regarding the RP 92, but unfortunately, I've not had the same experience with them.

that is not the experience that i've had with RP 92's. They have a nice pleasant draw but it's not too loose, it's large but not volumnious amounts of smoke with a nice spicy feel to it.

Damn, that's unfortunate. I've had several sizes of '90s and '92s and haven't had a problem with the draw, loose or tight. Sounds like your suspicions about the treatment of your box could be accurate.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience with one of my favorite NC's. I have honestly had nothing but the best of luck with each and every '92 I have smoked. It seems as if your suspicions of the box itself may have validity to it.

Hopefully time in your humi will bring them back, I have had sticks that took
4-6 weeks to be smokable.

I've found little difference between the 92's and 90's, some minor flavor differences but that's about it.

Re: Bad Experience with Rocky Patel Vintage 1992

I sent an e-mail to my B&M after the first RP 92 I smoked. They never responded, but they did remember my face the next time I stopped in and brought the subject up. The owner told me that I could bring the remaining sticks back for an exchange. I will have to do that.

Should I give the RP 92 a second chance and exchange for another box? My fear is that the new box could be in the same condition.

I tried one of these for the first time last weekend... it was absolutely excellent. Left a very nice after taste too (too bad the sangria killed that pretty quickly).

I haven't had any problems with the 90 or 92.

Sounds to me like they just need to rest in the humi for a while (weeks)... Did they burn really hot? If so, I'd guess that's the problem.

The RP 92 didn't feel hot to the touch, but the ash was the whitest ash I've ever seen. I think that is an indication that it may have been burning hot. As much effort as I put into drawing on the cigar, there was very little smoke volume.

taste is subjective.
we must have the same taste, as i felt these blew old mens balls for a favor.
they royally suck. the "flavor of coal" is not far off in the description.

Whoah Greg!!

IHT and I often prove taste is subjective by having such differing tastes. He totally hates Punch Gran Puros for instance and I love 'em.

In this case however I couldn't agree with ya more Greg, the RP Vintage '92s blow old men's sweaty saggy wrinkled balls IMO. I like the '90 RP Vintage line though. Go figure.

Re: Bad Experience with Rocky Patel Vintage 1992

I have to agree with Matt and Greg. These were nothing like what the hype was all about. They look great, construction was nice but the flavor was about as bland as it could get.

You may want to try and let them set in the humi for a couple months like Churchlady said and give them another try?
