keeping cigars burning well while on the go?

lately I tried to expand my smoking a little to include outdoor activities like mowing the lawn (riding mower).... FAIL. I couldn't get the poor cigar to stay lit, when it was lit it kept tunneling, and in general it didn't go so well.

Any suggestions for smoking on the go? (light wind, golf course, lawn mower, etc. etc.?). clearly I'm not looking to smoke a VSG or an Opus here, just a nice $3-5 stick that I can actually enjoy, rather then spend 2/3 of the time trying to relight and correct burn issues.

Try dryboxing for a few days. Sounds like they are too wet.

What humidity are you storing your cigars at?

When I was new, I stored my cigars at 70% and I had major burn problems and wrappers cracking. I now keep my stuff at 65% and I rarely have problems.

Re: keeping cigars burning well while on the go?

I know when I was using a waterpillow for humidity and was rocking my ammocanidor I had the same problems. Not really sure if it was too much humidty or what not but I know when I got some beads and a few boxes and set up the cooler all those issues went away. I have the 65% beads and love them.

Now I have two coolers and both kinds of beads and all I know is the sticks love it in there cuz they smoke great.

doh... guilty as charged.... humidity is right around 68-70% (took me forever to get it stable there!), I've been using the water absorbing crystals/gel.

I had been planning on posting next week asking about humidity, because I was seeing a lot of people posting that they were keeping things in the 65% range... but I guess that pretty much confirms it. No wrapper cracking problems, but I have been having very minor burn issues... I had just figured they were because my technique for lighting them was a little off.

ahh well, all makes sense now, thanks! Now all I have to do is figure out how much of the beads (heartfelt I assume) that I need and order them. Heartfelt makes 60-65-70%, I'm making the obvious assumption that the 65% are what I should probably be using....

"ammocanidor" -- I love it!! never thought of using one of those... but I bet it would make a hell of a starter humidor, or foam + small ammo can = SWEET traveldor.

BOTH kinds of beads? different brands, or different humidity levels?

I have 2 coolers one with beads from Heartfelt (65%) and one with beads for Scott (65%). Sorry for not being clear. The ammocanidor was great. It was too small. It was air tight and handy.

no problem, thanks! I'm still new to the beads, wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else to know about

I've got a few xtra ammo cans, think i'll give a try making a travelammocanidor

I rinsed them out with some water and a little baking soda. tossed in a empty box and was good to go.

But if you want serious storage go to Wallyworld and pick up a huge cooler. It may seem big right now but before you know it it will be full and you will wish you did get the big one.

I would definitely get a cooler. I have 4 desktop humidors and a 75qt Rubbermaid cooler from Wal-Mart. They all have 65% beads in them from Heartfelt Industries.

Re: keeping cigars burning well while on the go?

ammo can was only for a bigger traveldor. main humidor is somewhere around a 200-300ct unit.. granted I have it 2/3 full... but I digress...

lol... I really hope I dont get to the point of filling a cooler :P

*sliding down the slope and refusing to acknowledge it*

yep, they're at 68-70% (never over 70%). I'll bring the humidity down when I get home next week.
