Cooling unit ?

I was directed to another thread the other day by someone and in one of the replys was a guy and I cant remember his screen name but he had come up w/something for a humidor that kept the temp at a constant 68-70 I believe and he said he would have the for sale for about 150 soon. Does anyone know what Im talking about? I would do a search on it if I knew what I was searching for. Thanks guys

Re: Cooling unit ?

I dont know everyones situation but I keep my cigars in the house. Since the house is temp controlled I have never seen a need a temp controlling device. I say keep your cigars in the house and keep your house at 68-70 and you should be fine. Just my

Re: Cooling unit ?

sounds like a Peltier thermal cooler. I don't know if they have them big enough for a cabinet humidor though.

Maybe its just my ignorance but if you keep the cabinet in the house why the need for a temp control device?

Am I the only guy who opens windows in the summer? Low 80's with a breeze is just too good to keep outside.

If people like their environment warmer then I totally understand. Otherwise it makes little sense to me.

Sometimes it is impractical to keep the house cooled to 68-70(damn wife & electric bills) and heated to 68-70(damn electric bills).

For the most part temps don't fluctuate too bad on me, but I have thought about using one of those doohickeys before, and someday I will build a walk-in humi for myself based upon wine cellar components.

I would think the only issue could be if the cabinet receives direct sunlight during the day or may possibly be near a heating/cooling source. Otherwise, so long as the temp in the house remains somewhat constant and the RH levels are maintained, I also don't see any problems except for the possible issues I noted.

Re: Cooling unit ?

I'm not sure which post you are referring to but I had a whole bunch of threads early last year about me building and selling cooling units for humidors.

To answer some of the people's question on this thread who seem to think that their house is the pristine keeper of temperature, I hate to inform you but you might live in a part of the country where air conditioning is standard. Here in San Francisco almost no one has air conditioning and we do get very cold and very hot all year long so the point of having a temperature controlled unit would be like fine wine. With wine 1 degree matters in a wine cellar. I'm not saying this is the case for cigars but fixations do make a difference. And last year we had heat wave after heat wave in the high 80's, which is a feast for cigar beetles and Beetle Bailey.

Spectre 1 send me a PM with what you are interested in.

Re: Cooling unit ?

Very interesting im looking at getting a temperature control unit myself when i get some money, we are in a heat wave here, the last 18 days have been between 90- 107 F. Luckily my humidor is in a dark cool room. But after many hot days the temperature does get too high.

Ive got an Anitiem Cabinet so a cooling unit would be very good. Shoot me a PM with any info you think worth writing up about your product.

Re: Cooling unit ?

I have converted an old radio cabinet into a humidor and used a pelter setup. I live in Houston so humidity is not a problem, but heat is.

I picked up the cooler (MAA260T-24) at company caller called Melcor in NJ for $270 and the PS (MES-24-06) for $85. I got the temp controller and thermometer at a company called Oven Industries (ovenind.com) in PA. I cant find the invoice for prices. I think it was $39 for both. These were some of the best prices I could find.

I have had it running for about 2 years without any problems. I did have to put 3 small recirculation fans on a timer to keep the humidity consistent in the cabinet. Also I have 3 pounds of humi beads.

It keeps 65 - 69 F and the humidity is 65% - 69% if I turn the thermostat all the way down I can get it to 45F (but not recommended)

Sounds good... how did you install it, did you have to cut a hole out of your cabinet to do so?

Also a Peltier system for $85? .... sounds to good to be true.

I had to line the interior with cedar and mounted the cooler during the install.

The cooler was $270 the power supply was $85.

Re: Cooling unit ?

I bought some Peltier units, step down transformer (120v-12v) and a Johnson controller thermostat, cut a hole in a 100qt cooler. Wired the Peltier and extra fan to the transformer and plugged it into the controller. Bam 65 degrees and 65% humidity using kitty litter. This project is about 2 weeks old and seems to be working great, all for under $250 including cooler.

This was done as a test for my next project, an old Ice Box that I'm turning into a humidor/wine cooler.
