Cigar friendly life insurance companies?
I've read other threads here about life insurance, but most of them are about trying to defeat the tobacco test and claim nonsmoker status.
A Farmers agent told me that if you smoke 1 cigar a year then you are in the same boat as a cigarette chain smoker...which means the rates go up by 3 - 4 times the nonsmoking rate. Same thing if you chew once a year. I think that is insane. And they rate 1 cigar a year higher than living with someone who lives with a chain smoker....they don't seem to account for second had smoke....that person can still get the nonsmoker rate even through they breathe second hand smoke daily. Farmers does a blood test and not a mouth swab. The agent also said that if you claim nonsmoker status and later decide to smoke, then you need to readjust your policy or else it may not pay out if they determine after death that you were what they consider a tobacco user. Are there companies that are friendlier to cigar smokers? |

Re: Cigar friendly life insurance companies?
My wife and I have policies with Northwest Mutual. They have a 1 cigar per month policy. Apparently, the CEO is a cigar smoker and needed something for himself.
The nic test was urine only. I passed without any in my system. I'm a 1 cigar per day smoker. I may have taken a day off for the test though. Best of luck.

Re: Cigar friendly life insurance companies?
It's just so darn easy for the cigar smokers to get past the nicotine test, why bother reporting it?
Insurance company will still have a hard time proving you smoked cigars even if you do develop cancer. |

Re: Cigar friendly life insurance companies?
I am a part-time insurance agent in Florida. Not sure which ones (because I don't do much if any life insurance) but there are companies that have better rates for cigar smokers than someone who smokes cigarettes or uses smokeless tobacco. I know that don't help much, but I would shop around. Seems like I remember Prudential might be one of the better ones for cigars.

Re: Cigar friendly life insurance companies?
Depends on what you qualify as friendly.
If friendly means high premiums knowing there is a greater risk you will die, then yeah, they are friendly and charge you an arm and a leg. There is no way a company will view you as a smoker in a "friendly" manner. It is a gamble for them. They gamble you will pay and out live the policy. Anything you do to reduce that likelihood, which means increase the risk, you will pay dearly. |
