Angry OK now I'm Pissed

Being a long time 'casual' cigar smoker (one or two a week), I often enjoy getting the JR's or CI's catalog and browsing for a good quality smoke for the money. Now being a working stiff average guy that "doesnt" have a ton of disposable cash to spend on sticks and have one of the 75+ humidor's like most may have, I look for a quality smoke at a fair price, like many would do.

CI had a recent deal in there catalog which was offereing a 10 cigar Rocky Patel Double shot sampler, 5 sticks of the "Fussion" and 5 of the "Double Maduro" for $19.00. I called a the day after i received the catalog and was told " sorry, we are sold out" and we only had a very limited amount.
Did they "really" have them to begin with ? or just a marketing BS scheme. If they were that limited, than the folks with a lot of disposable income and plenty of time on their hands, scooped them to add to the dozens they already have.

JR's (Lew Rothmans) latest catalog, have a nice page of 5 stick samplers. So I see a few I would like, say, the Montesino's or some Nat Sherman's and when I go online and plug in the number, they are all "Out of Stock", this was a little tiny add on an obscure page, in fact I tried a few Partagas, Hoyo's 5er's, and got the same results. The Catalog Just Came Out when i tried !!

Finally, Going back just a few years, most cigars came 25 to a box not 20, but lately I notice the boxes are coming in at 20 but the price has not changed or gotten higher. I have been to the Dominican Replublic, there are literaly dozens of MILES and MILES of Tobbacco fields. I dont see a shortage of any kind so again, the old adage of maximizing profits.

So you are stuck with either buying the Cremosa Crappers, or dropping a chuck of change for a decent (small) box of smokes. I realize it is a luxury hobbie nitch but this sure can discourage the casual guy to give up the sticks altogether....

Re: OK now I'm Pissed

With the boom of internet sales the catalogue has become obsolete. By the time you receive the magazine those same deals in the magazine have been on the web for probably 1-2 weeks at least. That gives those guys that pay attention to those sites a long time to swoop in and grab them all.

Bait and awirch-old tactic

Also notice how the box size in the supermarket stays the same BUT the contents are less for the same price--Sneaky price increase

Only in America

Spot on analysis my friend.

I went through a similiar situation as you and now have a couple humidors and a vinotemp!

What I can suggest is to stay away from the catalogs, they can be fun to look at and read though it is an inefficient way to shop for most things nowadays.

With cbid.com be patient - dont spend more on something than you want, check the MSRPs and again be patient - if a deal gets away from you more than likely the same deal will come up again in a couple days or a week.

Re: OK now I'm Pissed

Not sure how this could be called "bait and switch"
Catalogs go to printers several month's before they arrive at your home. As I am on the West coast, I get mine a week or two after those closer to the distributor.
If its a good deal you may miss out. Stuff like the Little Havana overruns will sell out within days.
There are many other options and ways of finding the deals. Many have been suggested. The telephone also works. Online may be more convenient, but it certainly is not the fastest. Snooze you lose!

I agree, No bait and switch going on. The deals are posted and known far before the catalogs hit the mail...Just keep an eye out for the deals online and you to will be falling down the slope at breakneck speed...

Re: OK now I'm Pissed

The catalogs do serve an important purpose (at least for me). They expose me to brands and cigars that I may not have known about and it gives me a chance to do a little research. I never really use them to look for deals though.
