Hi all. Hope this is the correct forum for this kind of question. I'm new to cigar smoking. Been really enjoying trying out different ones over the past couple of months.
Since I've just started, my list is pretty small, so here are the ones I've smoked broken down by the ones most enjoyed. Favorite so far:
Next favorites (not in any particular order):
Least favorites
What I actually seem to enjoy are the cigars that have taste(for lack of a better word.) I like when I can taste the wrapper and don't really like the paper to seem dry. The Exodus 1959 and cusano 18 came recommended by a friend, but when I tried them they seemed sort of 'pappery' and the smoke didn't seem to have much taste, but I might try it again to be sure. What I'm wondering is if someone can recommend some less nicotine-kick cigars, but ones that still have a lot of flavor. Sometimes I think I want a calmer smoke but one that still has a lot of flavor. I don't necessarily want to say medium-bodied, because based off some googling, I've read that it's possible to have a full bodied cigar that doesn't necessarily have a super strong nicotine content? Since I've only smoked those listed above once, I can't recall which ones had a lot of 'kick', but the one I had last night.. the Joya de nicaragua seemed pretty strong, and coupled with the gin I was drinking seemed to give me quite a buzz (yea I know gin supposedly doesn't pair well, but I like gin I really enjoyed the flavor and smoke and richness, and didn't mind the kick because I was in the mood for it anyway. Can someone recommend some medium strength(?) cigars that still have a lot of a flavor? In my newbie way of describing what I like I'd say I enjoy ones that have a heavy smoke that seems creamy (I don't like the dry smoke taste), tasty wrapper (I like oily, but want to try some that aren't as well), that finishes smooth. I'm sure I'd like coffee or chocolate type tastes as opposed to other descriptions I hear such as nutty, grassy, etc (however I've yet to really say that I've tasted these any of the ones I've smoked, but that's probably because my tastes aren't that discerning yet.) Thanks for helping this newbie out with some recommendations as to what to try next. I think I might try the Rocky Patel 1992 or 1990 that I hear a lot about next. |

Re: n00b here, some recommendations based off these I've tried
Drink sweet drinks and/or have a full stomache with strong cigars becuase they, and all cigars, lowers your blood-sugar. That is why you felt buzzed. A symtom of low blood-sugar.
Try more Torano's, Padron's and Pepin made cigars. Also, check out the fourth sticky thread down in this forum. Last edited by NCRadioMan; 10-26-2008 at 05:38 PM.. |

Sounds as if you already like fuller bodied cigars. I would reccomend trying anything by Don Pepin Garcia, with Tatuaje being at the top of the list.
Also if you would, please introduce yourself in the New Gorilla section. Here is the link: New Gorilla Forum Also remember to click on my sig line to see if you are eligible for the noob contest. p.s. I like gin with cigars.

Re: n00b here, some recommendations based off these I've tried
Perdomo Champagne and Oliva V are both mild/medium with fuller flavor.
I also agree with Pepin suggestions, Tat Noella's are one of my favorite smokes.

Jose Piedra's are very good for the money if aged for a couple months in the humi. Hoyo De Monterrey are very good IMHO, pricey though.

Re: n00b here, some recommendations based off these I've tried
Hmm they seem to be a lot cheapr than the others mentioned...Tatuaje Noella, Oliva Serie V, Perdomo Reserve Champagn
All three of them seem like ones I want to try though. I should probably also try the Hoyo Dark Sumatra, since I haven't tried that yet either (cheaper also), but that's definitely on the strong side. I was interested in some medium bodied ones with a lot of a flavor. Reading some reviews on the the Perdromo Reserve Champagn mentioned in this thread, it sounds like a nice one to try. The Tatuaje Noella sounds great also. Both will be great to try but I probably won't have the money to make them regular smokes. |

Yep, that is why Tats were my suggestion.

You might want to also try the
Padilla Obsidian CAO Brazilia Padron 2000 All give a nice coffee/cocoa flavor but are more like a medium-full in strength.

Re: n00b here, some recommendations based off these I've tried
Try the Joya Celebration, a bit milder than the Antano.
I would also recommend: Tatuaje Havana VI La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero or Cameroon(milder) Oliva V
