Can I save them?
So I just got back from a long mission up here that I brought cigars on, however I didn't have a humidor or access to one, so we just got back and the few cigars I have left are pretty dry, they've been sittting in the plastic bag for the past 20+ days in either the heat of the day or in the real cold.
So if I stick them in the humidor will it save them or should I just save time and smoke the ones that are left dry and suffer through it?

Re: Can I save them?
If they haven't already cracked there is hope. Just do your best to bring them back slowly. Introduce them to a 70/70 environment too fast and they will most likely split. Start with room temp for at least 24 hours then perhaps a 60%. If they are still in one piece move it to 65%. I keep most all of my sticks at 65% and I suggest that if you can get yours there in one piece you leave them there.

Re: Can I save them?
Make sure there are no beetles first. Check for pin holes, tap the foot and make sure no grey ashy stuff fall out, just tabacoo if something does tap out.

Re: Can I save them?
Go slow. If they are very dry, it can take several weeks to bring them back to 65% without damaging them.

Re: Can I save them?
They will be fine - chuck them in the humidor and enjoy in a couple of months from now!

All above advice but I would wait 6 to 8 months.

Re: Can I save them?
Leave them in the bag and put a hygrometer in there to see how dry they are. They may not be too dry. Assuming they can be brought back up to the proper humidity level fairly soon you probably want to give them 2 months to recover from the heat. Like others have said keep an eye out for beetles.

Re: Can I save them?
Considering where you are, it's probably not practical, or worth your time and effort, to make any heroic attempts to save them. Just toss em into your humi/cooler (if you have one) and smoke em later, or go a head and try one now. Cigars are much tougher than most folks realize, and they may be just fine. If they suck...well it ain't yer biggest worry.
Keep yer head down....my son is on tour 2 in Iraq (momma worries herself sick, I am damn proud of him).

Re: Can I save them?
I had some dry out on me. I read that you should place them in a zip lock baggie with some holes in it, then place that in another zip lock bag with a damp sponge and let it sit for a week or so.
I had 1 split, the other three seem to be okay, except for some slight wrapper issues. I have since placed them in my humi and they have been resting for 4 months so far. If I had to do it again, I would probaby just put them in the humi and hope for the best.

Re: Can I save them?
Putting them in the humi for a month or so should be just fine.
You can rehumidify cigars that have gone dry. The key to rehumidifying dry cigars is to take the process very slowly. Many people try to 'quick-fix' the situation by over humidifying like the baggy method mentioned above, causing the cigar to soak in the humidity too quickly and rupture. Start with a 55% RH for a few days, followed by 60% for a few more days, and then finally let it rest at 65% for another few days. The whole process should take at least 2-3 weeks for the cigar to be ready depending on how dry they are or how long they have been dry, as if they have been dry too long (over a month) the oils may have dried out as well. That isn't to say they can't be re humidified they may just be harsh and taste like cat turds. |
