Lighting your cigar - match or torch

So I have had this argument with several of my friends and there doesnt seem to be a consensus so I thought I would ask the question here. If you are indoors and there are no wind issues at all - and you have at your disposal torch lighter and a box of matches - which would you use to light your cigar and why?

Our two arguments that I have with my friends revolve around this:

1. torch lighter - fast and easy and better able to get a more even light across the foot

2. matches - argument here being using a torch can adversely affect flavor and matches are always ideal for cigars

What you do you guys think?

Re: Lighting your cigar - match or torch

My preferred method of lighting is the "3 match" technique. I've never experienced burn problems using it.

Since I smoke outside, though, I typically torch.

I will always choose a torch, for exactly the reasons you listed, quick, easy, and can get a nice even light.

see I feel the same way - but I have two friends who will insist up and down that a torch light can adversely affect the flavor of a cigar - I dont see it as I have used matches and torches..

Re: Lighting your cigar - match or torch

Torch, it's just simple and effective whereas matches you still sometimes need to use a few.

On another note I just want to say I think all this, "Don't use xxxxx cause it affects the flavor" is really silly. Even if it did affect the flavor it would only be for the initial light, it's not like it's going to ruin the whole cigar. I used paper matches plenty of times and never saw this flavor tainting every talks about. But anyhow, yeah... a butane torch 100% unless I don't have mine with me, then it's matches.

Torch. I have also been known to use my Zippo with no adverse flavors.

I'm gonna go with none of the above Jon.

A small stick of cedar is my preferred indoor lighting method. My lounge keeps a stock of them for us.

Re: Lighting your cigar - match or torch

The only way using a torch could adversely affect the flavour is if you scorch the wrapper.

Re: Lighting your cigar - match or torch

I use my combustible fingertips. All it takes is a quick snap of the fingers.

Torch and when the torch don't work, stick matches. I've heard that you should wait until the phosphorous burns off but the damn matches are so short you've gotta be quick and have some heat resistant fingers!

If you are in to toasting the tip then a torch would for sure be better.

Re: Lighting your cigar - match or torch

I usually smoke outdoors where it is too windy so I only use matches when I can light indoors or when well protected from the wind.
