I used to feel guilty and would finish a stick even if I hated it. Almost waiting for it to get better because I paid too much for it. Nowadays if a stick tastes like chit I will give it about an inch to inch and a half to improve. If it doesn't, well see ya! There's just too much good stuff out there to smoke that it's not worth my time to waste it on a cigar that I do not enjoy.

I'm pretty picky these days but not so a while back. Took um all down to the nub. Use to come in our maintenance shop in the morning, search out the ashtray and pickup where I left off. No reason to chuck a decent nub.

I am a relative newbie, and a Canadian one at that, so given what they cost up here (or the lengths it takes to get them), I tend to nub my cigars. Only 2 so far have I not nubbed because it was actually becoming "unpleasant" and more of a chore than anything else. Still felt a bit bad about it though. Probably has to do with my tendency to not waste things and clean off my dinner plates....

Strictly depends on the smoke itself. If I'm in a good mood and love the cigar, I'll smoke it until I'm ready to burn my fingers. If it sucks, I pitch it and try again with a different 'gar. I had a $10 smoke that lasted less than 2 minutes because it was rancid and the smoke made my wife turn green as she sat 5 feet from me.

Same here. I know what I like to smoke now, and stick with those 3 or 4 brands.
Last week I pitched a huge Perdomo something or other, it was just too much for my "delicate constitution"... Felt guilty as hell - for about 60 seconds. As soon as I lit one of my beloved Fuente's all was right with the world

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?

#2 - I have split the cost of a SINGLE CIGAR between cash and credit card at my B&M to get a stick I wanted (yes, I have been that broke temporarily). "Can I give you two bucks in cash and put the rest on my card?" as I scramble for quarters in the bottom of my pocket.

The next time I have a cigar I KNOW I like, but it's plugged, I'm gonna try breaking it up and sticking it in a pipe see if that works.

I'll have to go with smoking it to the bitter end. Especially with the pain of shipping and waiting or the prices up here in Canada it's hard to throw a stogie away.

Though if I did throw it away I doubt I could pick it out of the trash.....well......depends what it landed on and what landed on it.

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?

i'll always finish it, except for rare instances where something is making me sick. i had a taboo value line yesterday that was terrible (all the others were pretty good yardgars so this musta just been a bad one. shoulda assumed such when the wrapper was creased up a mm for nearly the length of the cigar). regardless, i kept with it. i spent my hard earned 50 cents or so on it and i was gonna fight..i mean, finish...it to the end.

to the op: glad you smoked those sticks! hope you wipe them down first!!

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?

Since I'm still going through the experimental process, I tend to smoke most to half or 3/4. But I really haven't had too many that were that bad.
But I definately am going to give the $10 & up smoke more time than the $1 smoke.

As for #2, living in Canada, we inevitably go through extrordinary lengths and/or cost to get the cigars, which brings us back to #1

dang... i cut off the wrong end then, I cut off more of the cap cuz i thought the wetness was like... making the tar stick to it... or something. I'll try cutting the other end next time, nice!

When that stick canoed, you could easily see the area where the tobacco was loose (thereby creating more air/oxygen flow, resulting in more heat and burning). There were no problems with the draw at cap end.

[quote=mrreindeer;1972000]I think I'm right with you Gary; we invest so much into this hobby (not only the cigars but the extra goodies we have to maintain the hobby) that it just seemed like I should see the thing 'to the door' and I haven't yet had one that I 'just couldn't stand'. But I have noticed in final 1/3rds that the taste strengthened to a point a little less to my liking and well, I've just pressed on through more times than not.

I agree with both of you. Between purging the cigar and slowing down my puffing at the last third of a cigar that I am not sure if I like, I give it a chance to suprise me.
That being said, if I knowingly buy a cigar or cigars to be a yard gar then that is altogether different. Many have meet their death by mower blades before it was their time to go.
