I don't care how much a cigar costs or how 'special' it's supposed to be. I give it an inch and if it's a rocket, it gets tossed. I don't even feel obligated to nub a great cigar. The time factor figures into the cigar I grab but if I'm craving a certain churchill and I only have an hour, I'll smoke it as long as I can before letting it die.

To answer the second quandry, I would not smoke a cigar that has been up a Limey's nose. Unless it was a God of Fire or any Cuban Bolivar.

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?

There are occasions where I feel REAL guilty for puting a stick down prematurely. Like when I have a La Aurora Preferido and the fellas just came over after I lit the cigar. Once I just said, have a seat and would you like one. They said yes. The funny thing was that one of them didn't have too much of it...wasn't feeling like a cigar at the time...and gave it to me to finish. And I did!

There are other times where I just don't care and will dump it posthaste.

I've had cigars that were good on the light and then had this chewed-aspirin taste to it. I dumped those fast...not even an inch in.

But to be honest, I will smoke ANY stick until I am done with it, until I FEEL done...and no more.

Now the lengths to get a cigar is different. I've gotten off work early to make sure that I got home early in order to get the package off the porch and hide it from the missus. And another one is the Preferido above. See...I'm a HUGE germophobe. And for me to stick a cigar in my mouth after my friend did is huge. And my friends actually stopped talking and looked at me and gawked. I told them that it was a great cigar and how much it was MSRP. They all laughed and then said that I was a closet germophobe and not really "one of the boys". Of course, I had to respond: "Foolish human...your viruses are no match for me!" I know...it's a random. But the cigar is really good.

No guilt. Usually to the wrapper. I'll put it down when the gar gets to hot or is uncomfortable in my hand... conveniently enough, the cigars i've smoked all started to lose their luster by that point.

You know, I wouldn't say I feel GUILTY about tossing a smoke that dissapoints, I feel annoyed. I tend to think, "why did I buy that damn thing".
Now, I will admit to being frugal and if a cigar is even halfway decent I tend to nub it, but when they get too hot or bitter/sour tasting...they go. Then I make note to never get another one of that particular cigar.

+1 that's a good way to go if you insist on toughing it out, purge it, then just go slow, take little "sips" to keep the tip "quiet", slow slow slow.

But I have noticed in final 1/3rds that the taste strengthened to a point a little less to my liking and well, I've just pressed on through more times than not.

I agree with both of you. Between purging the cigar and slowing down my puffing at the last third of a cigar that I am not sure if I like, I give it a chance to suprise me.
That being said, if I knowingly buy a cigar or cigars to be a yard gar then that is altogether different. Many have meet their death by mower blades before it was their time to go.

If the cigar gets gross the last 3rd (like it usually does IMO) I just toss it out....I very rarely nub

If something is truly foul, "sour", bitter, hot, "metallic", "crushed aspirin", sure, it's not worth torturing yourself over it, but there are also cigars out there that are just blah, and others that you can tell are actually good cigars, but they're just not your "thing". I will stick with those just to see what, if anything, might happen. Sometimes they surprise you, sometimes not so much.

I'm not sure if this is considered a no-no or not, but I've never seen it mentioned on the board (could've just missed it though). I carry a 2mm hex wrench (allen wrench) in my smoking pouch for whenever I have a stick that's plugged. I poke one hole straight down the center of the 'gar and it works like a charm every time. For the larger ring gauges, I poke three holes: one in the middle and one on either side of the first hole, or else it won't draw evenly.

(You could use a paper clip in lieu of a hex wrench, but you can't get them perfectly straight, the diameter is a bit large, and the risk of poking a hole through the side of the stick is a lot greater, imo.)

Just thought I'd mention that.

See, that's what is wrong with this country's economy.
You could be using this: , but instead rely upon an inexpensive hex wrench.

How do you expect cigar retailers to make ends meet if they can't sell us overpriced, unnecessary gadgets?

Poke it, ream it, smoke it, and then get your nuts tightened.

I have a piece of wire clothes hanger that I straightened out, sharpened a point on one end and made a loop for my finger to go through on the other end. I also filed small notches about a 1/4 inch apart on it to help "chew" through any plugs. Works as well as any "draw poker" I have ever used.
