Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?)
I touched upon this in another thread of mine when I likened myself to George Costanza searching through trash for an eclair but I thought I'd open it up on a new thread.....
And I know there were other posts kinda like this, none of which I could actually find, so let's play again (and the 2nd part, I believe, offers a new twist). For those good at numbers , this thread has two parts: 1) Do you feel guilty, even the slightest bit, when you let your cigar die & don't finish it right up like a good boy or girl clearing your plate during dinner (even the peas)? Here you've spent your hard-earned money on this sucker and even if it's not great, damn it, I'm smoking it all! - to answer my question, why yes, David, I do feel like I should smoke the whole thing so it's very difficult to put the damn thing down. Why, I've often smoked a cigar I've wondered about putting down but just couldn't do it. Why the hell is that? 2) What lengths have you gone to in order to get that cigar....me, the other day, well, I wanted to scare myself silly on Halloween, so I actually smoked a cigar that some British dude put up his nose. Deep. I was desperate, just desperate I tell you. I figure I bought the sucker with my own money, it's a perfectly good Boogergar and I may as well smoke it. I just couldn't throw it in the trash. Hell, even if I had, I'd probably be there like George, fishing it out. How far have you gone to get that cigar? (and I ain't talking about shoving your cigars up your nose....or maybe I am...) Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?
I have really learned to set them down the second they start tasting like something I do not care for. Once I am past the halfway point in a cigar I tend to pay more attention. I would rather have memories of that cigar of the best parts before it got harsh. I do nub some but most I smoke about 3/4 of the way. Tar type buildup is a big turnoff for me.
Thanks for the thread.

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?
1) I smoke my cigars to the point where I'm not enjoying them or am pressed for time with no regrets. It may be nubbed, and inch left, halfway, or just barely into it if I'm not enjoying it at all.
2) LOL on this one. My humidor is close enough or I can get to a B&M to get a cigar. I've never been to the point where I have no cigars. Now when I was younger, if I ran out of cigarettes and couldn't get out to the store, I'd go digging.

Life's too short.
I've nubbed em, and tossed em after 1/4 inch. I am not gonna waste my time with something I don't like. Price has nothing to do with it.

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?
1. If I want to smoke a cigar I've been anticipating and yearning, I do my best to make sure that I can enjoy it uninterrupted. Of course, one of the kids could always show up bleeding, or some other unforeseen emergency, but that's rare. And it's only a cigar after all. And I'm not making a habit of it.
If I know there's a decent chance that I won't have that 2 hours or so to relax and not hurry, I'll compromise by selecting a shorter cigar. Yes, I don't get the cigar I really wanted, but when I eventually light up that one, I'll enjoy it to the nub. If I'm doing something manual and think I may set it down and let it go out, then I'll select a lower value smoke, like a Consuegra or something. 2. I'll go stand in the garage, get in the hot tub or pay a visit to my local B&M lounge to smoke that thing. When I want a smoke, which is daily, I want a smoke.

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?
I feel no obligation whatsoever to nub every cigar that I torch. Its a sunk cost - already been incurred and doesnt figure into how much of it I smoke. Come to think of it, there are several things that determine how much of a cigar I smoke. Time - am I rushed or can I sit back and relax? Enjoyment - Ill nub the heck out of a tasty treat, but theres no way in hell Im smoking something that doesnt taste good. Smoking solo Ive found that I smoke more of a cigar when Im around others. Go figure.
Doooood! You smoked that thing? I hope you cleaned it off days before with some vodka or something like. How did it taste? Were there more 'natural' oils on it? ![]() |

Pitch it when it is no longer enjoyable. The only thing worse than spending too much on a stick is spending too much on a stick and hating it eventually.

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?
The answer to #1 is yes, I feel guilty any time I don't finish a cigar because that cigar was my responsibility because I probably bought it with a certain amount of research and spent time lighting it the 'right way' and by God this sumbitch is going to get smoked. Now, having said that if it was gifted to me and I get thru at least a third of it and it is still making me wretch then out it goes into the woods behind me where it will decompose into mother earth only to be reincarnated as a better cigar. ( yeah right )
#2 I have done some pretty crazy things in the past for a cigar I love,,,my beloved Opus X where I have driven down to Palm Beach Gardens into Sabor Havana Cigar Store to buy them at MSRP. ( yes, I realize that when you factor in gas I could have stayed home and paid quite a bit more but then I wouldn't have been able to take my cruise while I was there,,,always a method to my madness,,2 birds with one stone kinda thing. Oh my brother you will soon learn about lengths and what people will do with your smokes as you will be on the receiving end this week of a little box of pleasure and I won't even tell you what part of the anatomy these suckers vacationed in,,,,,heh heh he,,,enjoy!!!!

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?
i must say i'm glad to see i'm not the only one who pitches a cigar, so
1) I agree, once if gets to the point where I have to purge it too much and it just pisses me off, i pitch it. becuz for me the point of a cigar is to relax, and if i'm always having to pamper and take care of it, it's not doing it's job anymore. I usually pitch it with inch and a half/two left? i don't like that tar taste. |

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?
Like most of the others here, I chuck it once I'm no longer enjoying it. However, I have grudgingly tossed a stick because I was in a rush that I would have continued to enjoy if I had the time. It was getting close.
I have had some that were worthy of nubbing pretty seriously. I had one large RG Cohiba that was very tasty right to the end. My puffs were small so as to not make it too hot, but the smoke was plentiful and plenty tasty. I had one stick that was canoeing baddly, so I clipped it (twice I think) while it was lit. Rolled it between my fingers to try to even up the draw and relit it. Was a shame because the smoke was so damned tasty. I had another that the wrapper fell off after I took the band off, somewhere between half and a third left, so I smoked it anyways with just the binder keeping everything together. It worked pretty good. Although I haven't gone through too much yet to get a smoke (besides paying ridiculous Canadian taxed prices at a B&M), I'm running out of my staple and may have to make an order soon. ![]() |

Re: Let it die vs. HELL NO I'M SMOKIN' TO THE NUB (do you know how much this cost me?
I guess I really have four categories for smokes, really good, pretty good, meh, and truly foul. Unless it's one of the few truly foul ones or it has a terrible draw, I'll generally smoke just about all of it. A cigar with a bad burn or draw but with a good reputation, I'll withhold judgment until I've had 2-3 of them, in case it was just a fluke, or I might have done something stupid in the storing, cutting, or lighting. I'm really cheap, too, so I just hate throwing one away.
