freaking beetles!

Okay, so I'm looking through the Vino and inside a sealed tupperware container that I haven't emptied out yet because I'm waiting for my cedar shelves/drawers to arrive and I look at a stick that a buddy gifted me and there are two new perfectly round holes eaten out of the freaking thing.

The tupperware has been inside the Vino for about 3 weeks now at a pretty steady 65/65 give or take and again, it's been sealed (except for the times I sneak a peak like I just did). Before the Vino (bought about 3 weeks ago or so, this cigar and the others were sitting in a pretty warm desktop humi).

There are about 6 or 7 other cigars in the tupperware with this tainted one. This one is an el-cheapo that my buddy just wanted me to try so I'm thinking that maybe (hopefully), the beetles are just in this one. Especially because I've thrown some cedar strips in the tupperware and about 3 of the cigars in there are actually wrapped in cedar, which I've heard helps prevent beetles. I have not removed the cedar wrapping to check (it seems pretty snugly wrapped around the cigar).

So, if humidity and temp are fine and there's cedar in there to boot, how the heck did this happen?

I've now taken the culprit out, put it into a ziploc and have thrown it in the freezer. I'm not sure I even want to save this one but I'm going through the motions.

Should I put the entire tupperware container in the freezer too (with the other cigars)? I'm just so against freezing and I don't want to ruin the other cigars.

Or is it possible the Mr. Beetle has just decided to munch on the el cheapo and left the others alone?

Once I take this cigar out of the freezer and slowly re-introduce it to humidity, should I even bother smoking it? Won't I be eating the beetle? Yum. Not really.

I know there are some other threads already about beetles and freezing but I thought I'd specifically ask pertaining to this particular situation.

Thanks fellas/ladies.

I would toss it and freeze all the cigars that it was in the container with. The beetle probably hatched while in the warm desktop. Freezing does not hurt cigars and cedar does not prevent them.

Re: freaking beetles!

hey dave. Chances are the egg hatched while in your desktop. Keep in
Mind the critter goes through a larval stage as well.

I would throw the whole Tupperware in the freezer. Go through that process. Let them rest in the vino for awhile then smoke away.

Re: freaking beetles!

I'd ship them to me. Upon smoking and recording the number of *POP*s I hear I will then let you know what kind of infestation you're looking at

Dave, do ya think the bad cigar was really from the friend? What kind was it? I swear you have the same luck I do with that black cloud that seems to follow us around,,one day it's drivers from hell and the next day it's a bad cigar. You did the right thing putting it in the deep freeze.

Smart thing to do. Chances are the grub hatched before you added the tupperware to your Vino. Good thing you kept an eye on the sticks. The upside is that you only lost a couple of sticks and that they were isolated from the rest of your stash. For this very reason, I like to store most of my cigars in boxes, so if there's an outbreak, hopefully, it will remain localized. You also might want to look into buying some Serrico beetle traps discussed here as an early warning device:

"Using a man-made pheromone called serricomin -- which, the creators say, is identical to the sex pheromone of female beetles -- and a powerful food attractant, the traps lure male and female beetles out of your cigar boxes and onto a sticky sheet that seals their doom."

Ii's a good thing the female beetles are bisexual.

Seriously! I know the cigar with the holes was from my buddy; I also know that he doesn't keep his sticks in a temperature controlled humi and he lives in the OC and it does get a lot hotter out there than at my house. It's a local brand from OC; I can't quite remember the name but I doubt any of you guys have heard of it. I hadn't. I think his shop out there rolls them.

That stuff looks great; I think I may just have to invest in a few sheets and also use them on my wife.

Re: freaking beetles!

Smart move on freezing. In fact, a lot of major retailers take this step automatically before selling their sticks. As for cedar, it may not prevent them from hatching, but it will prevent them from spreading if they're boxed in with it. Tobacco Beetles hate Spanish cedar. Best thing to do though is make sure all your sticks are treated before purchase.

And...dude...you're a bit queasy at the thought of smoking a 'gar with a beetle in it, but you'll smoke one that's been shoved halfway up a Brit's nose?

Re: freaking beetles!

I had a friend get a box of stogies from someone that had a beetle and he did nothing for a month and things got really out of hand very fast.

Be careful.

David just needs to have some JW Blue to warm up to the idea.
