My cigars taste funny
Noticed a few days ago my cigars have started to taste funny. There's a similar aftertaste that overpowers the tobacco taste lately and it's just not good. This is true for the ones in my desktop and the coolidor. Both are stored at about 68/67 all the time. All my humidification stuff is pretty new so I don't know what it could be. No sign of mold or anything else like that.
Maybe it's just because I've been tired lately? Can that affect the taste? Anyone else ever have this problem?

Re: My cigars taste funny
Your state-of-mind can affect the taste as can being tired. I'll have a cigar before a round of golf and it will awesome. Same cigar after I played, for some reason, will not taste the same and will not be as good.

Re: My cigars taste funny
Have you been eating something different lately or more likely, flu season is upon us and you may have started to come down with something.

Did you salt test your hygrometers? I guess it is unlikely that both would have gone off at the same time, but it could be worth a shot.

![]() Are you cutting enough of the cap off ? I've had tar build up in the past when I haven't and the cigar tasted very bitter. I was even able to notice the gooey stuff. Blech!! As others have said, cold season could have something to do with it. It's hard to taste when you're coming down with something or are all stuffed up. A spicy meal before smoking a cigar can kill the taste buds too! |

Re: My cigars taste funny
I'm still leaning towards not getting enough sleep as the explanation. They burn fine, so I don't think the humidors have a problem. There's just a weird aftertaste to the cigar that kinda masks the tobacco flavor.
Hopefully I figure it out soon (or it goes away).

Re: My cigars taste funny
1. Any new medications? The buds can really go haywire with certain meds.
2. Did you start wearing any fragrances or change them up? Olfactory influence is huge, especially if you're an aftershave whore. 3. Are they all from the same original box or bundle? Perhaps they need more age, or perhaps they have aged too long. 4. Are they naked? Perhaps there is a marriage of tobaccos occurring that you are noticing. Especially true if you also put some naked flavored sticks in with them. You probably stock the desktop from the cooler, so it would make sense that you're noticing the same effect in both places.

Re: My cigars taste funny
I'd keep a watch for the flu bug. I've noticed that I can be feeling fine and then my cigars start tasting funny and a day or two later I feel like crap with my sinus getting packed up.

Re: My cigars taste funny
![]() ![]() ![]() BOOGERS & BEETLES, OH MY! I notice mostly in the last 1/2 or 1/3 that I haven't been enjoying them so much. And none of them (ok, except one Camacho Trip Maddy) were anywhere near a British nose or a beetle. I've learned that the 'funny' taste can either be ammonia or tar buildup. If it's ammonia right from the start (like I noticed in my early cigar hobbying), I've learned that the cigars are still too moist and you need to drybox a couple of days before smoking and make adjustments to your humidity. Test the gauges. Oftentimes, cigars from the B&M and those that are shipped to you are very wet. If it's the tar buildup at the 1/2 or last 1/3 mark, then it's the type of cigar, I guess. Maybe go with less strong sticks. |
