Puros?

I had an good interesting with the rep for Arganese the other day. He asked me to take my pick of four blends that he had on hand. We talked a bit about each of them. I then asked if any of them were puros. I was really surprised by his answer, because I was under the impression that a puro was a cigar made of tobacco that was entirely grown in a single country.

This gentleman told me that puros were cigars made completely of tobacco NATIVE to a country.

Is that your understanding? If true, then you would have to agree that very few cigars are puros, wouldn't you?

Re: Puros?

If a tobbacco is grown in a country does that not make it native to that country? It sounds like he is restating your statement using different words. I could be wrong though.

No, if a tobacco, or any other plant, animal, or what-have-you is native to a country it means it originated from that country. If you take a Peruvian seed and grow it in North America, it is still native to Peru. Not sure if that clears it up or not .

That being said, my understanding of a Puros was always Wrapper, binder, and all long leaf filler, all grown in the same country and hand rolled in that country.

If they were all grown in the same country, but then exported and rolled somewhere else, I would still be willing to consider that a puro. It may not fit the strictest definition.

Re: Puros?

It sounds like his purist view of how to define a puro is downright puritanical.

Re: Puros?

The Cohiba Maduro's are puro's using a maduro wrapper grown in Cuba. I'm pretty sure they are considered puros and I don't believe the maduro is native to Cuba.

Experts out there? Maduro native to Cuba?

Actually the maduro is created by a process that regular leaf goes through. A leaf from any country can be a maduro, so yes, the Cohiba Maduro is a puro.
