I guess I just use matches...
I know the ban on taking lighters on planes has been lifted, but when it was still on there was this funky device from Colibri that you could carry a lighter in.
Supposedly it was built to allow the carry on of a lighter. It cost around $20. Maybe I am missing something, but when I travel, I don't even mess with it.. I just throw some matches in. I guess I can chalk this thing up to devices I don't see the need for. ![]()

At some airports you can't carry a bottle of water on the friggin plane.

Yeh, I believe if you had one of those carrying cases, you could transport a lighter in a checked bag.
I don't think I would trust TSA or anyone at the airport to travel with one of my beloved lighters. ![]() When the ban was still in place, I used to just stop at the first store I could find and buy a bic. A couple of years back we were in Vegas and I bought the best bic lighter I had ever seen, the flame was awesome. Unfortunately, I had to just leave it in the room when I left. Now I just carry a bic with me. I really do prefer a torch, but a bic works just fine. Although, I always end up burning myself as the metal gets a little hot after being on for 15-30 seconds. ![]()

Re: I guess I just use matches...
You couldn't carry on a lighter no matter what container you put it in. You couldn't put butane lighters in your checked baggage either, because they could explode due to the pressure drop at higher altitudes. I think the device you're referring to is one that would keep the lighter under pressure so it wouldn't explode in the luggage compartment.
But yeah, any time I flew I left my lighters at home. A book of matches was plenty to get me through, even though technically, you weren't supposed to take those either. |

you can fly with soft flame lighters but not a torch style lighter.

Re: I guess I just use matches...
I used to arrive lighterless and buy a Bic,
then abandon it for the trip home. Now, you can carry a Bic. Works ok for pipes and cigars. |

Re: I guess I just use matches...
I must have been lucky, as I travelled twice recently from London's security conscious airports, and my torch zippo and cigar cutter passed through the security checks without any problems.

Re: I guess I just use matches...
GOt one of those fancy Colibri cases from a BOTL (thanks Dave
) so I throw a couple of Bics in there if I'm checking luggage. In case anyone was interested here are the regulations from the TSA website: "Common Lighters - Lighters without fuel are permitted in checked baggage. Lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked baggage, unless they adhere to the Department of Transportation (DOT) exemption, which allows up to two fueled lighters if properly enclosed in a DOT approved case. If you are uncertain as to whether your lighter is prohibited, please leave it at home. Torch Lighters - Torch lighters create a thin, needle-like flame that is hotter (reaching 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit) and more intense than those from common lighters. Torch lighters are often used for pipes and cigars, and maintain a consistent stream of air-propelled fire regardless of the angle at which it is held. Torch lighters continue to be banned. Strike-anywhere Matches - One book of safety (non-strike anywhere) matches are permitted as carry-on items, but all matches are prohibited in checked baggage." Also: "As of August 4, 2007, in an effort to concentrate resources on detecting explosive threats, TSA will no longer ban common lighters in carry-on luggage. Torch lighters remain banned in carry-ons."

Re: I guess I just use matches...
Thanks for that Stick!
And uh, don't tell nobody...I checked in my filled, single torch Xikar on a recent trip to and from NYC with no problems and no case....Now that I know, I'll probably leave it behind. Darnit. I did manage to bring back 3 huge (I mean BIG, like 6x the size of a regular box...from Batali's "CarneVino") matchboxes from Vegas in my wife's purse....hmmm TSA doin' a great job, as usual. ![]() |
