Big, bad burn problems....

In reviewing my notes this morning, I saw a clear and direct correlation between burn problems and the size of the stick. Rarely have the coronas or lonsdales given me problems... But once I get into the robustos, torpedos, double coronas, etc., I seem to be asking for trouble!

Any observations out there???

IMHO, I wouldnīt say that size matters. Iīd suggest checking out the humidity. Probably the cigars arenīt correctly humidified.
Construction also counts. Depends on how tight the cigar is rolled and if itīs evenly rolled. I canīt say Iīve seen any direct link between size and burn quality, unless youīre talking about "eggs", where Iīve seen reviews and everyone complains about their burn, but this goes back to construction.

How long are you letting them rest? Most of the burn issues I have tend to be things I smoke too soon after they are delivered or bought.

I've noticed this too. The larger ring gauges seem to have problems staying lit or burning unevenly for me.

Re: Big, bad burn problems....

With a few months time at 63-65% in the humi, I have had no noticable burn problems. I am not including touch ups. At 70% and not allowing proper time in the humi, I would experience canoeing (etc) - I cannot recall if the problems were isolated to larger ring smokes.

Maybe it's harder to roll a larger ring gauge evenly?

I posted pretty much the exact same question in an earlier thread, and got some interesting answers:

Re: Big, bad burn problems....

A good test for you, take one of the larger ring cigars that has been giving you trouble and "dry box" it overnight (place the cigar into an empty cigar box that has been sitting out long enough to dry out), then smoke it the next day.

If your burn problems are cured by smoking the dry boxed cigar chances are RH is a higher in your humi that it should be.

Re: Big, bad burn problems....

Yes, You may have more instances of burn issues in the larger ring guage cigars but if your humidity is right and your smoking quality aged cigars, you normally dont have that issue as much IMO. Take for instance a young Opus X , It will burn like sh!t and go out all day but take a 5 year old aged Opus stick and its a totally different smoke.

Actually, from what I've been reading, I think this MAY be the case. I rarely smoke anything that hasn't been down in the humi for less than a month. And I've not experienced that many burn problems. But those that have kicked up a fuss have been the larger cigars, and especially the figurados.

Ahh well... Guess I should stop reading my notes!!!

Re: Big, bad burn problems....

I've frequently had burn problems with figurados...never really correlated it with the chance of uneven rolling. INteresting thought...

Re: Big, bad burn problems....

most of the burn problems i've experienced were pretty minor and related most directly to construction quality. had the problem on different sizes and shapes. have had a couple that were much too high in RH and they had a bit worse burn than the others.

since setting up beads at 65% and having a "dry box" at around 55-60%, I haven't had any burn problems related to anything other than just a cheap poorly constructed stick.

Re: Big, bad burn problems....

I have problems with the larger ring gauges... especially torpedo sized sticks. My main problem is tunneling and I'm constantly correcting the burn with my torch. It has to be my humidity... I'm working on getting all my boxes set up at 65% with beads and hopefully after a little time they'll even out.
