I could, but that won't fix the underlying issue of their lack of concern for their customers and disregard for the law about having an opt-out feature, hence the FTC case, SpamCop report and the email I sent to the abuse department of their domain host (which happens to be a company I used to work for... )

That's a shame! I really like Holt's and their selection. I kinda like their email deals and have ordered a number of times. Have yet to get a phone call, unlike Thompsons.

I've never tried to unsubscribe, but I see your point. There is no "unsubscribe me" link on the emails (which state I'm getting them as a result of my "account preferences.) So I logged in to my account to see if I could change it - no luck. Very disappointing, considering their customer service over the phone is excellent.

SafeUnsubscribe kicks ass - one click from the email unsubscribes you completely. No going to a page and entering your email address or logging into your account to unselect 45 checkboxes, etc. Sad to hear about the problems with Holt's, Dan.

Wow, I don't get any emails from Holts, I don't even get the catalogs any more.

They should definitely have an unsubscribe at the bottom of their emails or at least a way to log into your account to unsubscribe.

With that said, I placed an order on a Saturday night and on Monday they had free shipping on the same thing I ordered. I was going to call up to get an adjustment but figured I did place the order before the sale. When I checked my credit card, they had already refunded the shipping without me having to ask. You can't beat that.

Ive never ordered from Holts or Thompson and now reading this I probably wont ever. My only saving grace is that I have a PO box and have my cigars shipped to the house so I dont get catalogs or anything of that type. Im now glad I live so close to CI and they dont mail or call

Update:

Holt's has contacted me via PM as a result of this thread (not a result of the emails, but this thread... apparently, all my emails to them were being sent directly to their spam folder due to their "overzealous" spam software).

Grant seems like a cool guy, and has assured me that I have (finally) been removed from the database. I still do not know whether or not they are instituting a method to unsubscribe from their mailing lists, so I'll let him field that question.

I hardly every have a problem companies like this, but I use Gmail and it's easy to just create a filter to shovel emails to the Trash if a company will not opt you out of an email that doesn't get flagged as spam.

After my last post I emailed the Web admin at Holts:

"You guys should check out this thread. [link to this ClubStogie thread] You are not making any friends by failing to provide an unsubscribe option. Please note I do NOT want to unsubscribe, but others do. I have been ready to make a second purchase but am now considering another retailer."

I received this prompt response from Stephen at Holts:

"Many thanks for the heads up. We are aware there are a few shortcomings with our mailer software and are currently in the process of updating. Thank you for the notice and I hope you continue to be a patron of our store and take advantage of our many specials."

Damn. No coupons or freebies . . . but I don't think its such a bad response. I'll keep getting my occasional Opus/padron/etc. samplers from Holts.

Two Words....MAIL FILTER.

If you use a mail program on your computer (eg. Outlook, thunderbird, Eudora, etc..), you can set a filter along the lines of:

All email with an address containing "holts.com" get moved to trash.


Also, everyone should have a junk account for stuff like this. You can get an account for free from yahoo, gmail, MSN, etc. If I order something, or sign up for something that requires an email address, I give them my Yahoo email account. My REAL email account stays nice and clean.
