48 Hour Thread - Please Put that out

I'd like to say I would have kicked her in the face....






But I'd put out my smoke and express remorse for compromising her lunch outing.

This is one that definately bothers me as I experience it quite often myself. It's not uncommon for me to be asked/told to put out my pipe or cigar, or to hear obnoxious coughs and jeers from people at a local coffee shop... while in a smoking section. All of them are puffing away on their cigarettes but light up something they're not a fan of and they don't mind letting you know about it. All of this mind you is in a smoking section. What do I say to them when they say the smoke bothers them? "Just like you can smell my smoke, I can hear your loud obnoxious voice and every bit of profanity you're constantly spouting and it offends me too."

Bottom line, it's a smoking section. It was these peoples personal decision to go to that restraunt, sit in that section, and especially sit beside you and your friends who were smoking. Some might say "some people just don't like smoke" but that's no excuse to be rude to others just because you don't like something. I'd just say back to them "no, I will not put it out" and not offer to move or the other things others might do. True it could be seen as being a jerk but to me it was their choice.

I would have asked them to join me they might actually like cigar smoke if they were smoking it. If they declined then I would tell them they were screwed.

I think that's a checkmate, right there. I think I would have offered to help them find a table more to their liking, perhaps in another restaurant. Or as someone else suggested, invite them over to enjoy it with you. That would be a very neighborly thing to do, as well. Or you could offer to arm-wrestle them for it. Lots of possibilities.
