question??? Slipt wrapper after lighting!

Hey guys, Was looking for some advice. I have a coolerdor with 70% beads. My hydrometer says 70%, witch is accurate. I have this batch of cigars for the past 6 months. They are rather large cigar for the most 60 ring.

Almost 50% of the time when I light up and start smoking the wrapper is splitting after a while. I understand if this would happen when you smoke them straight from shipping to your door. They should be pretty much dry after 6 months.

What's the problem??? Should I change my beads for 65%??

Let me know what you guys think!

Cheers

It does sound like they are too damp. Try letting the humidity drop , let them sit and then try them again.

Maybe dry-box for a bit may help... I go at 65% now and haven't split one since i dropped.

I went from 70% to 62-65%( my humi leaks a lil bit) and have really enjoyed what its done for the flavor and consistancy of the cigars

Dry boxing is also another great way to help a cigar.

Good Luck!

Ditto... some experts even agree that 65% is an ideal aging temp as well, cigars stored at 70% begin to take on a harsher/bitter taste as absorb more moisture

70% is too moist for my tastes. I used to subscribe to the old 70/70 rule, but after a little tinkering, I prefer 62-65% / 65 F. Lowering the RH in my humis has really helped. I rarely have any burn/draw issues and the cigars taste so much better. Definitely try dry-boxing the next cigar you smoke for several days and see how it burns and tastes. You'll probably want to lower your humidity after.

Re: question??? Slipt wrapper after lighting!

I've dry boxed a few maduro's with some success, primarily a few Partagas Blacks. But, these cigars do not have fragile wrappers. I would think that taking cigars stored at 70% and dry boxing them for a short time might increase the wrapper splitting problem due to the wrapper drying much more quickly than the interior. I'd rather place my vote on changing storage humidity to 65% and let them stabilize for several months. (BTW, I store all my cigars at 65% and around 67-78 degrees.)

Re: question??? Slipt wrapper after lighting!

Are you smoking inside or outside? If you are outside and its in the colder weather, there is lower humidity in the air. The difference in the humidity between the air and cigar will cause the wrapper to crack also.

Ditto this, as I have 70% beads and always drybox my cigars and don't have a split problem even with 60 RG. Try this and report back and see if that works for you.
