Walk in Humi at the Liquor Store

So I drop in my neighborhood liquor store last night and notice they are advertising they are now selling cigars. FWIW they may have been selling them for a while, I don't go in there much.

They've built a walk in humi, maybe 10x10 feet, closet style. I step in and the first thing I noticed was the smell or AROMATIC cedar almost floored me. They'd built all of their shelves out of aromatic cedar instead of Spanish cedar, wall-to-wall & floor-to-ceiling.

For humidification they had a little home humidifier in the corner kicking out mist, I looked everywhere but didn't see a hygro in there.

I fought with myself to mention it to them but it looked like the guy and girl there probably wouldn't have cared much. So, just like any good citizen, I did nothing...

Oh, I forgot to mention that they did have some nice sticks - Rocky Patel, Punch and some others. They just didn't seem to know much about building a humidor. I really feel like I need to let them know..........

I find that all the time at liquor stores. I've seen humidors at 80 degrees and 80% humidity where the cigars had a light mist on them. Like you, I said nothing. The owners at the ones I've gone to could not have cared less. They were also charging $5 for a Fuente Curly Head.

Really. It's not like this stuff is some huge secret that you have to hack into the DoD or CIA computers to find out. Five seconds in the walk-in at a real B&M and you would know they clearly did not use aromatic cedar, and even the Wikipedia entry on humidors would have steered them in the right direction for building and humidifying it. Since I'm going to assume that at least one of the people involved has an Internet connection of some sort, I will also have to assume they just didn't give a damn, which is sad and stupid since they are probably in the process of completely ruining several thousand dollars worth of inventory, just out of apathy and ignorance. Not a very good way to run a business, to put it mildly.

Before I started reading about it, I didn't know the difference, either, but I literally found out within minutes. The very first thing I read said to use Spanish Cedar specifically, and that it was not the same thing as aromatic cedar. The first!

They probably really don't care. I would never buy cigars from a place with this setup. I am sure that people who don't normally buy cigars will purchase them because they don't know any better. That is who the store is probably targeting.

Weird thing is, I really wonder if they saved any significant amount of money by doing it wrong. Like, compared to the value of the cigars, I mean. My guess is, probably not.

Re: Walk in Humi at the Liquor Store

I'd like to set up a tobacco shop that also sold some higher end spirits as well, and maybe some other, suitable items. i don't know if the liquor and tobacco laws here would allow that though.

Well, no, and you can't see it from Wasilla or Juneau, either. However...

I came up here with the Air Force in '87, and at least through '91 when I got out, the BX had a big tote board on the front of it that kept a running month-to-date and year-to-date count of how many Soviet fighters and bombers had been intercepted by Alaskan F-15's. I rarely go on base anymore, so I don't know if the sign is still up, but I do know that they are still intercepting Russian planes, even now, just not nearly as often.

There have also been quite a few people walk or dogsled across the sea ice between Little Diomede Island in the U.S. and Big Diomede Island in Siberia, which is only 2.5 miles. One person even swam across it, back in the 1980's. Several people have taken sea kayaks across the Bering Strait, which is only 55 miles, quite a bit closer than Key West is to that other famous island...
