Seems like a stoopit move for a company to do this. It's offensive from a personal rights point of view. Tobacco is still legal. I don't need a credit card company 'commenting' on my legal purchases. It's a little paternal and authoritarian of them to say the least. So, Daddy Mastercard doesn't approve? I just can't see a financial institution tying their money grubbing hands like this - it makes little sense.

If it is true: Mastercard =

"MasterCard said that financial institutions can continue to provide MasterCard acceptance for Internet tobacco sales if they have documented evidence to substantiate that the merchant is in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws to the satisfaction of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and any applicable State Attorney General."

Re: MC banning tobacco purchases effective the new year

I'm not too well versed in the ways of the law on things like this but it seems that the whole thing is targeted toward cigarette sales that were already illegal to begin with- not general tobacco related purchases (cigars, pipes/pipe tobacco, accessories). It sounds to me like mc is just tired of having to deal with the feds to track down people that were using their cards to break the law and is stopping it before it ever becomes an issue.
Has anyone been able to find anything more recent?

Strange, I wouldn't think that a Master Card would take such a high road stance on tobacco. Glad I use Visa

Amen,,MC can go screw themselves when it comes to what I want to charge. There are too many ways to pay for the products I want to buy.

This whole issue came up a couple years ago and was widely discussed here. There seemed to be no changes at that time, and the language was pretty much the same as it is this time.

Wow, that's super lame. I've been using Bill Me Later on CI and FSS. That seems to work pretty well.

I just did a web search and I cannot find anything about this. I found an old article from 2005 where MC was going to stop "illegal" tobacco sales over the internet. The article references cigarettes and not cigars though.
