It is very typical to have a secondary infection of a bacterial nature after being infected with a virus. I got quite the education on that the last 3 weeks.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce my children.

Virus 1
Virus 2
Virus 3

and my wife Virus 4.

It's been a rough 3 weeks fellers, let me tell you!

If you have ever seen the real effect MRSA Staph (antibiotic resistant) has on a person you would understand why over-prescribing antibiotics should be eliminated.

My middle son is a wrestler and contracted MRSA on his hand.
1st week:
1 urgent care visit
2 emergency room visits
4 family Dr. visits
cultured 3 times
lanced once (without any painkiller because of horrendous swelling, my 15 year old took it like a man when they lanced almost to the bone)
full battery of of antibiotics

7th day
2 surgeries in 14 hours(not including the lancing)
Quarantined room
IV of Vankomycin (the godzilla of antibiotics) They continually test to make sure liver and kidneys are not being damaged.

Hospital stay 8 days
30 days home IV 4 times a day through a pick line set in his inner bicep (parents administer it)
30 days home physical therapy (physical therapist comes to the house)

All because the viruses were introduced to, but weren't killed by prescribed anitibiotics in the past.

Scarier yet. There is now a Vankomycin resistant strain of Staph. (VRSA)

The rest of the story: He had gone undefeated in district competition and won district as a sophomore, but never got his run at state becasue of this. Maybe this is his year!!!

Oh, and the hospital bills?? I don't even ask my wife. Thank goodness for insurance.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I feel pretty passionately about this. I did a ton of research and learned alot.

Ditto this, as I was saying before,,,,anti biotics should not be prescribed for colds and flu but sometimes the patient insists and doctors will usually give them out,,,I know, because I use to be one of those patients who thought they knew better. I would never tell anyone not to take anti biotics if they indeed need them.

Re: Can you catch a cold from a cigar?

Didn't read any responses ( ), but I will tell you that a virus on average will only survive 5 days when not in a hospitable environment. Now, a humidor does give some hospitable qualities (warmer and wet), however the amount of time it is between human contact of the roller and the smoker is too great. You have nothing to worry about from large scale rolling operations in terms of catching a cold. Also, even if you smoked a cigar right from being rolled, in my opinion the environment of a smoked cigar would be just as good at preventing the virus from proliferating as anything. This is one thing you don't have to worry about .

This is true. You can't jump to a 'no antibiotics' claim right off the bat without more understanding into the person who is receiving them. My father has a bad case of asthma and many times Ab's are prescribed with any respiratory distress in order to prevent pneumonia. Just my
