Over the past week or so my humidor has not been able to keep a decent humidity level (around 60%). I've had the humidor for 3 months so it should be broken in by now. I am using the Heartfelt beads and they tend to dry up after a week or so. In an attempt to resolve the problem, I placed a half full shot glass of distilled water in my humi. After a few days I noticed that my humi has stayed at 68% with the shot glass in the humi. Does anyone know if I keep the shot glass in the humidor will it causes problems (i.e. bacteria, etc)?

Re: Humidor Problems
i keep one in mine, especially since its winter and cold out and not much humidity. I have never heard of any problem with it and it has been working fine for me...just make sure it doesn't get too humid in there.

Re: Humidor Problems
I would have to think no. The beads will (should) absorb the excess humidity given off. The only thing - I would make sure my hygrometer is in good working order. Also can just watch the beads - make sure they are not all clear. I use the same practice when my humi is running low - but for me low would be 58-60%.

Re: Humidor Problems
I was doing this myself, all winter, with no problems. Recently I bought a 50 count credo to replace the shotglass.
It's funny, I don't have a single problem with my beads in my two tupperdors and my coolerdor. Just the humidor. With only the beads in it, after spraying them, I get 1 day of optimum humidity then it drops from there.

Re: Humidor Problems
ditto..You should be fine. If you look back towards the beginning of winter you will see similar posts with the same replies. If anybody was having a problem it would have shown up by now.
I use a Diamond Crown humidifier in mine when the humidity drops so I won't have the risk of a shot glass spill.

![]() Beat me to the punch, Puff. Winter is here. Humidity level inside my house is half what it runs in the summer, even with me adding humidity via a fogged fountain. My winter maintenance of my humi requires a close watch on the levels, and extra humidifiers to keep constant levels for extended time frames. In the summer, I generally only need beeds, and never have to wet them!! |

Re: Humidor Problems
I keep a shot glass of distilled water in all of mine as well this time of year, it does all depend on where you are located, if it is dry outside it is dry in the house and then the humi, don't panic too much. I am constantly having to check all of mine this time of year, Damn Minnesota winters

Re: Humidor Problems
Hmm.. you might want to check the seal on your humi. Do a drop test or a flashlight test. Even in the winter, with just beads I get more than a week without having to refill them. Of course, now I use the old foam humidifier that came with the humi in addition to my beads, and I have no humidity problems at all, it's sitting rock steady at 65% GO VIPER!

Re: Humidor Problems
I share your tribulations!
RH in the house here in Michigan is about 32-36% in the winter. I keep 2 drymistats and 2 tubes of beads in each of my humis, and still find need for a shot of DW to keep them right. On the other hand, I have a couple of bags of beads in each of my coolerdors, and they hold steady at 68% for a week without misting. Seems as though it all boils down to the woods in the humis "giving it up" to the ambient conditions. Ahh well... In a couuple of months, I'll be struggling with how to keep the humi RH DOWN!!! |
