Beetle Test......Need your assistance

How do you know if there is a beetle still in a cigar?

After observing a cigar from a recent trade, I noticed several
small holes.

Any suggestions? Is it still smokeable?

Thanks guys!!

Re: Beetle Test......Need your assistance

I had a beetle problem and it was quite a hassle. This was about 10 years ago and lost a 1/2 my collection. Now, I freeze all cigars before going in the humidor. You'll have to freeze your humidor to be safe. You'll know if the cigar is smokeble, just by smoking it. Often there's too many holes and no compression.

Sorry for you, beetles are a problem if you get them.

Re: Beetle Test......Need your assistance

If your cigar is filled with holes, throw it away. You're not going to enjoy it.

If the cigar (s) has been in the humidor, do a thorough check on your entire stock. Insert the undamaged cigars into freezer baggies and freeze them for 48 hours. Remove them from the freezer while still keeping them in the baggies, and place them in refridgerator for another 24 hours. This should kill any larvae. It's important to put them into the refridgerator after taking them out of the freezer. You don't want to let them defrost and then try to light them. You want to bring them back gradually.

Be certain to clean the humidor thoroughly. Wash it down with distilled water, but don't oversaturate it. You may have to repeat this process. Some people sand it lightly with a very fine sandpaper first.

Personally I would destroy any sticks that appear to have been ravaged by the beasts. It can be an expensive lesson to learn, but learn to check your cigars before letting them into your box.

Good luck.
