Sampler suggestions?
I am a newbee and was wondering if you all could give me some suggestion on a good sampler, that won't break the bank too much, that would help get my "taste" for cigars?

Re: Sampler suggestions?
I'd shop around,,,maybe look at Famous Smokes and read some reviews of the 5 paks. Taste is subjective in that what somebody else likes might not be what you like. Experiment, try new things.

Re: Sampler suggestions?
I think it's a lot like beer. Some poeple only drink one or two brands, while others want variety. Are there flavors that your prefer (pepper, sweet, fruity, nutmeg, etc), or do you like to switch it up?
Just stay away from Thompson. They were my first sampler purchase. They list all of the brands, but don't tell you the sizes. If you dislike rothchilds, then you will be disappointed. If they send you stale sticks they will replace them, but you pay 3 shipping charges, which will cost more than the sampler. Some people say to start with Mild's, then work your way up. As a noob, I immediately took to the dark med-full flavored sticks but didn't like Mild's at all, so that philosophy didn't work for me. I've had full flavored sticks that had no real taste (Italias taste like ash to me), and milds that gave me bitter beer face (Causano 1 If you know nothing about what you like, then get a variety of wrappers and brands. Once you find one you like, do the following: 1) Try the same cigar in various sizes, 2) Try something else by the same company 3) Read some reviews of sticks you like, find someone who likes similar sticks, and see what else they gave high ratings. Take note when they say "it was good, but I prefer X". 4) Remember that how you store, light and smoke will affect the flavor. DON'T buy a box of anything you haven't already tried. You can't rely on the descriptions to know if you like it. They're trying to sell them, so they put a spin on everything. They'll say "distinctive full flavor" instead of "tastes like something died in your mouth" |

Quote:
For the same line of cigar, a long/wide stick tends to smoke smoother than a short/thin stick...at first. The tobacco leaves filter some of the tar out of the smoke as it travels the length of the cigar. This filtering smooths and COOLS the smoke, and longer cigars will filter more tar. However, you are now burning the tobacco PLUS any tar stuck to it. The more you smoke, the more tar builds up in the remainder of the cigar. More tar will intensify the flavor, make it burn HOTTER (harsh), and will deliver more Nicotine per puff. That 7x58 monster is gonna be a lot stronger at the nub than a 4x40. All that said, YOU can change the flavor depending on your smoking style too. Ideally, you want the tobacco to smolder. A thin stick is more likely to heat up if you smoke fast. Cool smoke = smooth smoke. A loose rule is a puff every minute or so...but who's timing anyway? Every cigar is different, so smoke it for as long as you enjoy it, and don't force yourself to keep going if you've had enough. I would rather toss a churchill a half inch into it, than endure some horrible dog rocket, or turn green and puke. If it's not giving pleasure, then what is the point? Keep reading, you'll pick up a lot from these guys. |

Re: Sampler suggestions?
You should check out the Joe's Daily Deal on CI. I take a look at it everyday, even though I have no more room for smokes. I just can't pass up a good deal and they put a lot of samplers and 5 and 10-packs on there. Also, pay a visit to the retail forum on here. The other gorillas are great about passing on good deals and free shipping codes (as mentioned earlier). Good luck.

Re: Sampler suggestions?
They put up some real nice Don Pepin Garcia samplers on cigarbid.com quite often. I would suggest looking into one of them. It was a 20 cigar sampler of some of his better cigars.

Re: Sampler suggestions?
Some very good advice already given. I would add that many times there are samplers for sale here on the forum from BOTLs. They are usually priced right and will have a good variety of sticks. They will also usually be a good mix of sizes.
One thing that most samplers from the usual commercial sources seem to have in common are unpopular sizes of sticks. |

Re: Sampler suggestions?
That reminds me, I made an offer and never heard anything back on it. Now I've forgotten what it was. I'm going to have to see if I can track it down.
