Purple Banded Gurkha Ancient Warrior flavor?

CI used to have purple banded ancient warriors which were a blend exclusive to them. I'm not talking about the ancient warriors that are still widely available elsewhere. These were 7x54 monsters with very distinctive packaging and only available at CI. For some reason they discontinued making them about a year ago.

The first one I smoked was awesome. The smoke was so thick I would describe it as chewy. It really coated the pallet. And then, half way through the cigar, it actually evolved into this red-wine like sweetness that was just outstanding. I experienced this with the next few I smoked as well.

Then I went a few months without having any. I saw a chance on Cbid to grab up a bunch after they had been discontinued and jumped at the chance. I let them rest and then, with major anticipation, fired one up about a month after I got in the big shipment. The red-wine sweet taste was gone! I didn't pick it up anymore. And I smoked another. And another. And another still. The smoke didn't seem as thick any more. And that taste never returned. They had become an average cigar to my pallet. I traded most of them away. I revisited one of my few remaining ones this past week and found the same disappointment.

So this raised two questions for me:

1. Did the age on these cigars cause the distinctive flavor to disappear? Or did my pallet just change? Anyone else experience this with these sticks or any other for that matter?

2. Does anyone have any recommendation on any other kind of stick with a red-wine like taste to it, or something similarly sweet that does not come from a flavored stick? I'd love to find something like it again.

This turned out longer than I expected, but I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I always feel like rocky patel vintage 90 or 92 cigars have a red wine quality to them but have never heard anyone else say that so maybe it is just me. Worth a try though...

1. I had one a few weeks back from the original batch I got a couple years ago and it had the same "red wine sweetness" that I tasted in the beginning.

2. I will agree with fizguy assessment when it comes to Rocky's 90/92 Vintage. Very nice stick.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. It's odd to me that the taste profile changed on me, but it sounds like it was just me and not the age on them.

I have to say I've worked my way almost through a box of Rocky Patel 90 Sixties, and while I think they are really good cigars, I haven't noticed the red wine taste. I'll have to look for it next time and see if I pick it up. And maybe I'll give the 92 another try and see about that as well.

Not to down Acids as I use to smoke them when I first started with cigars, but the Acid One is cured with 5 different red wines

I've never smoked an Acid. I've always had a bias agaisnt them. Maybe I'll have to give that one a shot, if for nothing else than a change of pace.

I got a 5er of these from a friend a couple years ago. I smoked one, but dont remember too much about it. I think I still have 4 left. I very rarely smoke any this size. You are welcome to them if you like and you can compare them to the ones you still have.

Thanks very much for the very generous offer. As long as you put a return address on the package, I'd love to have them and compare to what I already have to see if I got a bad batch or something.
