Anti-smoking ordinances threatens citizen rights

Holy crap! I can't believe it! Someone actually wrote an article that Anti-smoking ordinances threatens citizen rights!

Quote:
We are all aware of the dangers of smoking. Smokers can read the Surgeon General's warning on the packaging of their cigarettes, and yet they still choose to engage in a harmful activity. And that is their decision to make.

Restaurant and bar owners know that cigarette smoke is unpleasant for many of their patrons, yet most of them still allow smoking in their facilities. And that is and should remain their decision to make.

The government should never consider it their responsibility to protect citizens from themselves and their own personal choices good or bad.

It's about time! I've only been a smoker for a few months now, but i've always stood up for the rights of smokers. Back in 2003, New York jumped on the smoking ban bandwagon. I was a non smoker and I was pissed.

Here's an interesting read. A list of businesses hurt by smoking bans. Needless to say, it's a big list.

I thought I'd never live to see the day when lighting up a cigar could potentially be an act of civil disobedience in private establishments.

Nice!
It always amazes me that a perfectly legal product is treated this way. Imagine the outrage if a law were passed to keep crying babies or small children from restaurants. These lousy politicians love the tax money that tobacco raises for the states and we subsidize tobacco farmers but crap on the users. Not wanting to hijack this thread... Term Limits are Needed!!

Tax on Cigs

Governor Daniels just proposed a .25 tax hike on Cigs. He claims the best way to get Cig's out of the hand of minor's is to hit their pockets.

I don't agree.

And he's even a Regan/Bush Replublican!

it is always not a Republican-Democrat issue. Why do you keep framing it this way?

Taxes

I don't think I meant it that way. I know I stated that in an earlier thread, but in this on I was simply saying the Republican Govenor of our state wants to raise taxes on tabacco. I was making light if him begin a neocon and that I disagreed.

Various cities in my state have adopted anti-smoking legislation. Now we have some state-senator with too much time on his hands who wants to change the legal age of buying tobacco from 18 to 19. I'm not certain as to how changing it by a year will be a world-changing, life-altering thing to do for people, but perhaps I'm just not in the know. It's amazing to me that people draw the line and the sand about any and all restrictiosn regarding fast food, but are a o.k. with tobacco getting hit.

Anyone that wants to smike in New Jersey after April 15th will only get to smoke on the casino floors in Atlantic City but not in the restaurants and bars in the same buildings. Thats what I call government wisdom.
