Cutters

So, you go out and buy a 50 to 75 $$$$$$ cigar cutter and use it for so long that the cutting edge is not cutting as well as it use to. Is there a way of tuning up the cutting edge or do you just throw it away and get a new one. Not that mine is in bad shape. Just wondering what do you do.

Just something to talk about.

Xikar's are guaranteed for life. If mine goes dull I just send it back for free sharpening.

I have a self-sharpening, double-bladed guillotine from Cigar Savor. I've had for 9 years, and it's fine. It cost me $22 off of eBay, and come to find out the guy I bought it from was a wholesaler/retailer from across town.

The Zino Davidoff, the favorite of Cigar Dave runs in the $40 range, and is also a double-bladed, self-sharpening guillotine. There's no reason for these types of cutters to go dull on you.

If I'm paying $75 for a freaking cutter, I damn well will NOT consider throwing it away when it goes dull, and for that matter it should last a lifetime to begin with.

Yea... me too...
I use a punch about 90% of the time. I prefer that to clipping the head to open it up. I dont like getting all the tobacco bits in my mouth but will use a cutter if the draw is still hard with a punch or, of course, if the head is not round.

I mainly use a Xikar that came in one of those Cohiba gift sets, but I have like 6 other cutters. The best cutter I own is actually a $10 self-sharpening one from Cuban Crafters. Also, I've never actually dulled a cutter, the only one I've gotten rid of was because the blades didn't fit snugly together, so it cut unevenly.

Re: Cutters

I sent my new Xikar back 13 days ago because it wasn't cutting well. I hope to have it back shortly. I'm still using a $4 double blade guillotine that works very well. It's just not a Xikar. You know what I mean. I held off buying one for a while but finally gave in. It's a nicely made piece and I like the design.

Re: Cutters

Nothing for nothing I had to buy an Xikar just cause I thought that is what cigar people do. So I got one off the devil site and well I'm not that impressed with it. I guess if it was not for the warranty, it would be just like any other cutter. (Also it is not the top of the line Xkiar)

Re: Cutters

Xikar wins on style points with cutters, but it is not the best cutter in my opinion. I prefer a Palio. The only difference in expensive cutters and cheapies is the quality of steel, ie how long they will hold an edge. I understand the true makers of stogies just bite them off. Marketing has us buying all this expensive junk.

I can echo that comment. I guess I was expecting something more out of the Xkiar I got....now I hardly use it. My $10 V-cutter never lets me down.

Re: Cutters

I've got a Palio and it's self sharpening. But, you can send it in to them and get it sharpened if for any reason it ever does go dull. I love my Palio cutter
