Schwarzenegger Under Fire For Smoking Cuban Cigar

You can file this one under "Get a Life". Anyone that is up in arms about The Governator smoking a Cuban should be terminated.

The governor of California is the object of a stogie flap in Canada. The Ottawa Citizen newspaper reports that during a trade mission to Canada this week, Arnold Schwarzenegger bought a nearly $15 dollar Cuban cigar on his way to the airport...

I think every cigar smoker ever would be in agreement here. The US is allowed to accept money from Cuba, but we aren't allowed to buy a few stogies?

Every major European democracy has trade relations with Cuba. The simple fact of the matter is that is if were to normalize trade, free trade would be the end of Castro. People would see the displays of all the consumer goods and wonder why they couldn't afford them and that would be the end of him. However, we have an expatriate population that is very influential in a state with a ton of delegates. That group holds sway on policy and they just can't bring themselves to normalize trade for any reason. While Fidel is a human rights abuser, the guy before him was no peach. Had the supporters of the previous regime been more courteous to those underneath them. The embargo is stupid. It didn't work the previous umpteen years, and it won't result in the downfall of Castro at all. It's amazing that such a brain dead policy has lasted this long. Then again, it's based on politics, not on thought.

...There, Schwarzenegger picked up a Cuban Partagas cigar in a shop, with the $14.83 bill paid by an aide traveling with him, the Ottawa Citizen newspaper reported.

"Persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction are prohibited from purchasing or importing Cuban cigars, regardless of where they are," U.S. Treasury Department spokeswoman Molly Millerwise said in a statement.

From the above quotes from the LA News, Shcwarzenegger did absolutely nothing wrong:

1. his aide paid for the cigar, that means he didn't make the purchase, thus no laws broken. If his aide is prosecuted, he can always pardon him/her.

2. he smoked the cigar on his way to the airport, that means he did not import the cigar. What is more, like his spokesman said, there is no way to determine what cigar it was.

My statements above may be seen as argumentative and stretching, they are facts nontheless based on the way the laws were written and the information from the news. It will be interesting to see how this will play out.

You know what would make this story great?

If Arnie came out and said, "Yes, I smoked a Cuban cigar. So what? What are you going to do about it?"

Btw, I thought of that because I am smoking one right now and publicly stating it rather than saying, someone else bought it for me (Patrick in Germany did) and it's gone now so we don't really know what it was.

That was a little wimpy of him, imo.
