Tobacco Pipes To Cigars

I have been smoking tobacco pipes for about two years now but recently I have been trying some cigars and really enjoy them more than my pipes. The limited number of cigars I have tried are La Finca Fuma Larga, Angel 100 La Meca, JR Bolivar Corona Gigante and waiting on some La Floridita Toro Maduro.

The thing that puzzles me is that with pipe tobacco of different types, English, Virginia, Burley, etc., etc. I can tell a distinct difference between each one. I can even tell a difference between the different blenders of the same type of tobacco. With the cigars I have smoked I can't really tell a great deal of difference between one and the other. The only thing I might notice is one might be a little stronger than the other.

Is this the way it is with cigars or will I be able to better distinguish one type from another the more I smoke ?

Thanks Bill

the more you smoke, the more you should be able to pick out different flavors. Ive been smoking cigars for about a year and when I first started everything just tasted like smoke. Now i can pick out distinct flavors and what not.

1. Welcome to CS.

2. There's a learning curve with cigars just like there is with pipe tobacco. There are many different flavors you'll notice with cigars the more you smoke. I would suggest you read some of the reviews here and on top25, look for cigars where people notice certain flavors, and try them. Many cigars don't have flavors worth noting--these are cigars to avoid. Others can be incredibly complex. The more you smoke, and the more good cigars you smoke, the more you'll notice flavors and distinctions.

Your palatte (sp?) will evolve over time, mine did. I started smoking cigars over a year ago and I am starting to detect subtleties and flavors that evaded me before. My strategy was to try a huge variety of cigars so I could see what was out there, and I hoped that would help me develop a sense for such things, and it has worked.

What did you think of the Angel 100? I just saw those in JR's Catalog and was wondering of they were any good.

Re: Tobacco Pipes To Cigars

Considering my limited knowledge of cigars I think the Angel 100 La Meca's were very good. Medium to full, more on the medium side, with a good body and very smooth taste. Lots of smoke and good build and very easy to keep burning properly. I have found that I like the larger ring cigars and this one was proportioned just right, 6.12X52. The wrapper was a very nice dark brown with a good feel and a hint of a oily texture.

Welcome Bill! That's a tough question. It took me along time to develop the palate I have now. On the other hand I know guys that are long time cigar smokers that can't pick out flavors, just whether or not they like 'em.

Welcome to Club Stogie - I think that you will notice that over a period of time, you will start noticing differences in the leaf.
