Cigar Tasting Wheel

Cigar Jack has a wonderful graphic posted on his site today - the cigar tasting wheel. Let's help him find where it was originally published so he can keep it on his site for reference.

Good find Jack.

If it had pencil lead or metal on there, I would say CA published it.

Re: Cigar Tasting Wheel

It looked familiar and I found a similar tasting wheel on scotchwhisky.com. Its not identical but what made it so similar is that the colors are exactly the same.? Could be where it came from.

Interesting way to rate the taste of a cigar.

Re: Cigar Tasting Wheel

Great in theory but I can only taste a few of those flavors on the wheel. I don't know if it is my newbie palate or what.
Just curious, what is the purpose of the wheel (if you can taste all the flavors?)

Re: Cigar Tasting Wheel

I don't get the wheel.
Interesting as a list of things you might taste, but the organization makes no sense to me.

Spicy being opposite creamy sort of makes sense...
But why is sweet opposite caramel?
And why are chocolate, toffee, and coffee types of "caramel"?? I would have put chocolate, toffee, and caramel all under sweet, and put coffee I don't know where.
I also probably would have put Tea under floral, not earthy.
Leather seems more woody than earthy.
Balsa should be woody, since it is in fact a wood, not floral.
Graham seems sweet, not spicy.
And what is yellow vs orange supposed to mean???

So, just my opinion, but to me the list may be interesting, but is confused by the wheel.

I think the purpose of the wheel is to help develop a palate for discerning flavors. First, you would try to identify the larger groups, ie spicy, floral etc. Once you have mastered that, you would practice identifying the subgroups. I found that when starting out it is much easier to try to identify an overall flavor, ie sweet. It takes a much more refined/experienced palate to discern the subgroup of honey or syrup.

Re: Cigar Tasting Wheel

I like the wheel because it does not include "chewy". If you are strong on "chewy" please PM me what exactly the hell it is. So far, I don't believe in chewy.

The wheel lacks "grilled cheese sandwich" which I tasted once in a Famous 3000. It may never come up again, so lets not call that a wheel defect. Funny that I can't get a flavor rush from a Padron 3000 but I can get grilled cheese sandwich from an F3K.

Thanks for that Dave. I never woulda known it was possible.

Velveeta, by the way.

Thanks for clarifying some of these flavors for us. I would have (incorrectly) assumed that ass and crap would be in the same flavor family.....Now I know!!!

OK I am a bit concerned here. How do you know what some of those taste like to be able to later identify it in a cigar. The ones that give me the most concern are: Cat Pee, Bloody Thai Whore, Grandma's Depends, Biker Broad Thong, and Assless Cowboy Chaps!!! You must lead a really interesting life.
