Freezing your cigars...??!!
I get a weekly email from cheaphumidors.com that gives advice on cigar care. This week the email was about freezing your cigars and humidor to prevent cigar beetles from ravaging your stash.
Here is a small excerpt from the email "The easiest way to prevent this from happening is to make sure your humidor is in a cool, dry place. Another option is to freeze your cigars for a few days, then let them thaw slowly, putting them your humidor. This will kill all the eggs before they can hatch." Is this safe? and does it really work? |

From what I hear, it works. But I don't do it. If I see a beetle, then maybe I would. From what I hear you don't have to really worry about beetles unless your sticks are ISOM's. But I don't know for sure.

Yep, it's no joke. I haven't done anything like that. As long as you maintain a good 70-70 temp/humidity run where you stash your stogies, you're good to go.

I've had a break-out or two in the last 10+ years. Doesn't seem to be worth it to me?

I had a small incident last year. Freezing your stash will take care of the problem, but it's very easy for the cigars to be damaged. My advice is to keep the cigars in a cool environment, and be mindful of where you purchase stogies. If the B&M's humidor feels much too warm, there's a good chance it is.
Other advice would be to get a wine cooler and use it as a humidor. Many people do this, myself included, to evade the spring/summer heat. Some Targets sell a 28-bottle Vinotemp cooler that works great, and has a temperature control from 54*F to 66*F. |
