My Kuwaiti Cigar Setup
Just a couple of pictures of my "cigar rig" while I'm here in Kuwait.
![]() I started out with a couple of Xikar travel humidors I used to bring a small supply with me from the states. They were okay, but I wanted larger storage and better humidification. Cedar humidors are not airtight and the air here in Kuwait is very dry. What I settled on is the $20 photograph storage box with an Oasis system. The dividing wall there is a cedar lid from a box of Belinda Prominentes. Due to the seal around the edge of the box and lid, that Oasis hardly ever comes on. I threw in a humi pack from a box of Arturos and it generally stays just a bit above 70%. Mostly, it is just the fan that comes on to keep the air inside circulated. I just took a shipment of H. Upmann Vintage Cameroons. I also have left some Arturo Fuente Maduro, Thompson Phoenix, East India Company, and Hoyo de Monterreys in there. ![]() My cigar corner of the room I share with another lieutenant. The cigar jar holds my Belinda Prominentes and sadly dwindling supply of Punch Grand Cru Vintage 2000s. A couple of humi packs keeps them happy. The box of Romeo y Julietas you see there is Cuban. I bought the last three tubos and the dealer gave me the box. I can usually get Cuban Partagas and Punch tubos in small ring gauge size from the Kuwaiti shop owner here on the naval base too. I asked about a box of Cohibas and he said he could bring in 25 Siglo IIIs for $500. Hmm. A little steep. Maybe I'll see about a less expensive brand. I've had good experiences with the Romeos, so maybe some Churchill sizes instead.

Nice little setup you got going there. Very good idea to a tough problem. How much longer do you have to stay over there?

Nice set up for sure! I see you like the H. Upmann Vintage line. They are nice and smooth.
Which cigars are the ones with the green bands?

Yes, those are Phoenix from Thompson. A shade too mild for my taste, but not bad for the price.
I generally don't order from Thompson anymore, as it takes them too long (almost two weeks) to get here. Others are faster. Acesfull, are you Guard or Reserve? See, I live in Columbus too. I'm part of the 37th IBCT from the Ohio National Guard that deployed here to Kuwait to hold down various places. My battalion is the 1-134th Artillery and my battery is Alpha, located out of Marion, OH. I can see by your picture that you've been in the sand before. I wore the ACUs last back in 2005 when I was in Baghdad for OIF III. Ohio stuck me with a platoon of engineers from the 612th then. I'll be over here until about mid-December. I probably won't be able to post many pictures of me holding a lit cigar with some posh wine or interesting scenery in the background, as wine is hard to come by and the scenery around here is restricted by regulation to photography. Hmm. I just thought of this. Some of the boxes of cigars I order come with thin cedar dividing sheets between the layers of cigars in the box. I could line the box with those sheets to give a less plastic and more cedar character to the inside of that box...

Very nice set up you've got there. Good to know that despite being deployed you are still able to get a hold of and maintain a nice collection of stogies.
Spent some time in the gulf myself....it's the simple pleasures of life that helps time go by. |

Ashley,
I inquired about you in another thread, but now I know who you are!! You're the guy that burned the two Monty Montgomery CD's for me. Damn, it's a small world. I resigned my commission and am no longer in the military. 15 years was plenty!! I enjoyed my time in the Navy but I can honestly say that I don't ever look back at being in the Army and remember any good times. For those wondering, I went through OCS with Mr. Carrier. We had to bear the humiliation of selling scented candles in order to raise enough money for the dining out we had to hold. Once you stand outside WalMart, selling scented candles for a military organization, even Mocha Frappuchino can seem like a manly drink.

Always good to hear from the old OCS crew. Seems like a many of us have gotten out since then.
I've got a little less than 4 years until my 20 year mark and I intend to stick them out. Too much time invested already to lose the retirement money. The "novelty" of this profession is beginning to wear a little thin after all this time. My days of sleeping on the hood of a humvee for 4 hours a night are drawing to a close. As far as the candles, I hardly sold any. I simply detest trying to sell things like that to people. I still have a few of those candles. I tried to make up for it by working all of the Cleveland Browns games. Unless I'm mistaken, our class still has the record for amount of money raised.
