Cigar Sizes
So I decided to take my CI catalog, and write down all the different sized cigars length, ring size and what they're called (Robusto, churchill, etc) in order to study and learn them. What I found was that there didn't seem to be a standard for each type. I quit after about 20 different sizes. For the Churchills, I documented 12 different size combinations, and I also found that just because a cigar might be 7 1/2" x50 doesn't make it a Churchill.
What's the story here?

I don't have a specific answer to that question - I've noticed the same thing and have just accepted it as "it is what it is". But I'm sure there is some logic to the madness.
I remember reading somewhere that there are two primary tables for sizes: Cuban (traditional) and Others (non-traditional). I think manufactures vary their specific sizes as a way to distinquish themselves in the market. I'm sure one of our resident "in the know" folks will be along shortly to give us a better answer. ![]() |

Yeah. That's pretty much it. The "traditional" sizes are of Habanos making. The rest just make it up. Pepin often times stays true to the "traditional" sizes.
Cuba never(?) made a ring over 50 before the Cohiba VI, I think, so those are ALL "made" up. My memory sucks, but I'm sure there are web sites for this. Robusto=4 7/8 x 50 Churchill= 7 x 47 Corona is like 4 x42? |

just do like i do and take it as a general indication of how long its gonna take you to smoke. if it says robusto, i usually plan about an hour and ten minutes max. toro, usually about an hour and fifteen to an hour and 45, and so on.
i think people are too hung up on the names of the sizes instead of just paying attention to what dimensions they like in a stick. smoke some, see what you like, repeat. |

I take cigar names to be general indications of what size they will be. For example a corona may be 5-6", 42-44 ring gauge, a lonsdale is a little longer than a corona, sometimes a little smaller ring gauge, rothschilds tend to be short and fat, etc. There is certainly no standardization in this matter, and i guess there shouldn't be, so the manufacturer has some leeway on sizes they want to present instead of being forced to manufacture a certain size. If you keep studying the sizes you'll see that they all fall into a general size pattern. One cigar manufacturer, Nub, has created a whole new category with very short, very thick cigars, like 4" by 60 ring gauge.

I agree with everything said so far. As Stan said, many names are made up - for marketing purposes.

Kind of related to this - I learned a new word at the cigar show:
"Frontmark". It relates to the size, shape and name of the cigar. It was used frequently in the printed new product information. It's like a substitute word for "styles" when talking about products. Like a new lighter might come out and it will be available in 3 different colors or styles. A new cigar will come out and it could be available in 3 different frontmarks. Robusto could be a frontmark, but so could Gran Corona Especiale.

If you want a listing of the classic Havana sizes, Habanos make a cigar chart or you can get Min Ron Nee's encyclopedia. |
