Green Spots
I noticed on a cigar the other day there were some small green spots. It didn't wipe off and saw some more today on a yardgar I had at work this morning. I don't think it's mold. I saw Mango made mention of it the other day and not sure what it is. Humidor stats as of right now - 74% 72F. Both are a little higher than normal.
Could this me a natural occurring phenomenon?

could be natural discoloration, could be mold.
Either way, take a paper towel, wet it with distilled water and wipe down the area. If it comes off, it was mold. |

Ah very well. What if you smoke a cigar with mold on it? Is that dangerous or disgusting or something

I am living proof that green mold, white mold on cigars don't kill.

Moldy.
I wiped them with kleenex tissues and smoked them. I coulda, shoulda, woulda, used paper towel, but didn't, because that would ruin the delicate wrappers on the cigars. ![]()

Are the green spots ON TOP of the wrapper, or do they seem to be PART of the wrapper?
I have done quite a bit of reading and talking to the guys at CI. If your cigars have a lighter wrapper (Connie for example) this is actually normal. As the cigars go through the natural “curing” process, they will get a little tint of green to the wrapper, with some darker spots forming as well. I’m in no way a science major, but I do know that tobacco is still a leaf, which contains chlorophyll, which is what turns a leaf green. Moisture activates chlorophyll (think about it, what color is your grass with LOTS of water vs. NO water). Hence you get a little green in your wrapper. Mold will be on TOP of the wrapper! Maduro-wrapped cigars are artificially cured/cooked to get a strong, sweet flavor. The wrapper turns dark. According to the CI website, these cigars are almost “fixed” during the curing process, so there is really no point in aging them, because the tastes is “fixed.” Again, think about. If you stuck a leaf in the oven, what will happen to it? Finally, check out Candela cigars…… http://www.cigarsinternational.com/prod ... xt=candela Like Kermit, its OK to be green!

Once the leaf is clipped from the plant, it's over. Along with going through the curing proscess, how could the leaf still continue to produce chlorophyll. Way too much information from CI.

But at the end of the day, put my reasoning aside, I have had at least 10 different cigar people tell me the light green tint to lighter cigar wrappers is normal. Mold, which is completely different, is NOT normal.

Seriously, green spot on a wrapper will most likely indicate that the wrapper was "shade-grown."
A hole in the cloth (shade) allowed sun-light to reach the tobacco leaf, which allowed the "chlorophyll" process to take place. I am not sure if this green spot can be "fixed" during fermantation process. But, it is a natural grown process, nothing artificial about it, I would not worry about "green spot" for a second. On a side note, some Cuban cigars have green spots, which indicate they are genuine articles, at least that's what I read.
