Seems like the cigar market is on the uptick. Cigar smoking is getting more mainstream, and several resources online have shown a HUGE increase in cigar smoking in the 18-24 year old demographic.
Now, a big hike in a tax could slow that down. However, I believe we are paying 5 cents a stick right now. Even if that jumps to 25 cents, its really not a crushing change. The manufacturers and retailers could absorb 1/2 of that easily. Christ, the markup on cigars has to be out of this world. If the manufacturers and retailers can come up with a pricing strategy to combat the increase, this raise shouldn't be a problem. I mean, 50 cents a 5-pack is acceptable.
I just hate that cigar taxes are on the plate right now. We are at war, with a suffering ecomony, with oil and gas at all time highs, unemployment increasing, health benefits continuing to go up in cost..... and we are going after the cigar industry?????????????????????????
