Breaking News on SCHIPS

Breaking News ...

First of all, Cigar Review goes total retro 1998 with a scrolling news ticker at the top of the page.

Since I don't know how long I can take it being there, here is what it says:

The CAA, RTDA and all interested parties have reached agreement on the Cigar Industry's position on an acceptable tax increase that the industry can live with, if, in fact, the Congress passes the SCHIPS bill when they return from their recess after Labor Day. "What was needed was an acceptable compromise among manufacturing groups with somewhat divergent interests," cigar-review was told by David Berkebile, owner of Georgetown Tobacco in Washingtton, D.C. and Past President of the RTDA (now the IPCPR).

Scary. What constitutes an acceptable tax increase? I hope we don't go the way of the cigarette. How much now for a pack of smokes?

Neat ticket Kev.

Some of us at the shop have been discussing this. We hope the tax is reasonable enuf to keep it going but acknowledge that this may force a move to private clubs. If Congress chooses to show just how stupid they really are, it will likely drive most buying offshore. This could create an opportunity for CAA to ask folks to blackout id info on invoices and send them copies so they can forward to the newspapers to create a media feeding frenzy.

I'm guessing not, but I'm guessing, possibly depending on what that "fee" ends up being, that it'll be "illegal" to bring them in from out of the country without paying the fee?

Yeah, it'd be hard to believe you could get cigar from overseas cheaper then from CBid/Cigars.com, even with the SChip?

I know there are a lot of European sites that sell cigarettes to America, online tax free. The loophole is you can't buy in huge quantities.
