Camacho Interview Part II - Authentic Corojo & More

Cigar Review owner Kevin Godbee continues with an enlightening, educational and fun interview with Christian Eirora, President of Camacho Cigars. We learned how Christian goes about developing cigars, from seed, to blend, to taste-testing, to the packaging on the shelf.

We had an in-depth conversation about "Authentic Corojo" seed tobacco. The interesting background about "Corojo" Tobacco goes back to the 1930's. It originated on a farm in Cuba's legendary Vuelta Abajo region named Santa Ines del Corojo. For decades Corojo was the ideal wrapper on just about all Cuban cigars.

However, Corojo is difficult to grow, has low yields and is highly susceptible to blue mold. The original, renowned Corojo was phased out and hybrids were developed.

Camacho claims to have the only "Authentic Corojo" tobacco from seeds given to them directly from the owner of the original farm.

Nice interview. I agree with the notion about some smokers staying away from Camacho's strictly because they are perceived as strong. Now that I know the 10th Anniversary line is more medium, I'll give 'em a try and see what they're like.

I love them. They almost remind me of the Padron 1964 Anniversary.

Nice interview. Their corojo is an excellent smoke and limited edition maddie they put out a few years back was off the scale.

I'll disagee a bit w/ Eirora. I think the current corojo hybrid is better than the original. Maybe not quite as sweet but definitely creamier and more leather notes. IMHO, it's a toss up btwn Cuba and Nicaragua as to who growns the better hybrid. Further, w/o the corojo and criollo hybrids we wouldn't be seeing the number of "cuban-style" smokes we have these days.

Ha ha Craig! I purposely put Corojo in the title of this post to make sure you read and responded.

Very nice write up Kevin, thank you! In the past, I wasn't a huge Comacho fan really...but I do like the 10th anniversary and am enjoying the Corojo's that I won from TommyZ quite a bit. Maybe I need to revisit some of the ones I'd had in the past that didn't fit my tastes at the time...

Yup, both CM and I will definitely read anything w/ corojo in it.

Corojo is very popular these days (as it should be) and the competiton is intense with all the great cigars being produced so Camacho is just trying to differentiate themselves. Can't wait to see what the future brings. Can you imagine a corojo-ecuadoran sumatra cross? That outta be leathery.
