He said that's the way you're supposed to cup a torp-at a extreme angle like that. Said it'll unravel, otherwise. I never had a problem. I'd cut it straight, but shallow, so I could cut more later, if necessary. I only saw the finished cut, but he had left most(all?) of the "point" intact and cut it "down" from the point/head on the side.

So are giving Kevin Cosner back his man card????

Very interesting insight Stan, obviously never crossed my mind when I jumped the bandwagon. I'll be damned, I learned something else....

I have to agree with aces on the whole C.A mag...I picked up the issue with kevin and i use to get it monthly for a while...Just not enough cigar info. I mean you got the rating's and mabey a few small write up's That are cigar related but just to much fluff for me...so the aug. issue was the last time i lay down $5. for c.a....Just my opion Has anyone picked up cigar magazine??? Dude, forget the stupid magazines. They're WORTHLESS!! Get the catalogs. That's where the meat is. Study all the brands and sizes, and you'll get a feel for names after awhile. Go for JR, CI, and your local B&M might have a list also.

I took pictures last night on my cell phone. Yeah. Like that did any good? Can you see my cell phone?
I watched him do it last night, as I discussed this thread with him. He takes a double-edge guillitine(sp) and kinda "hooks" it at the very tip of the torp. And cuts. It takes a little "off" the "point", but leaves a "new" point behind and lays out a nice cut down the "side" of the torp. Hope that helps?

Actually, Cigar Magazine is pretty good so far. Not full of stupid ad's like that other mag. Some pretty good articles from what I've read so far.

Didn't even realize straight or angled was an issue on torps, or perfecto's for that matter. I've always cut them straight about half way of the cap and never had a problem of any kind.

IMHO, there is little use for the cigar magazines these days outside of the occasional interesting article, emphasis on occasional. They were a good source of info before the cigar sites but the sites have largely killed them. And now that the sites are posting more in-depth articles, they'll eventually go the way of the dinosaur.

Cigar Mag is probably the best of the lot. Good articles and the ads are largely cigar related. But I'd still ignore the ratings. If you do the math behind Lew's rating scheme you'll find it is "advantageously" weighted to lower price. Not surprising since Lew is the king of discount cigars. In essense, the ratings are another form of ads for his product. Even when the ratings aren't slanted by preferential math, the cigar mags ratings have a serious downside - you don't know the raters and what they like. This has always been a problem. The cigar sites have a huge advantage there.

In sum, I will read the shop copies at my local on occasion, but I won't buy the mags - not worth the price. And no, I don't care if the mags go out of business, the sites have more and better info.
