We have a rule here. You have to PM Kevin once you hit 100 posts.

I appreciate all the advice so far from all you guys. I have just been buying 3 or 4 singles from the local shop here and then just received a 16 cigar sampler from Thompson. I figured I would try as much as possible before buying bulk. That's another reason I started with only a 12 count humidor.

Did anyone get hung up on specific brands at first? I was first attracted to the sound of Kaluha cigars but was really disappointed. Then Gurkha is my next followed by CAO. I have 2 Gurkhas and a CAO Brazilia in the humi right now but wanted to age them some first. I did have a CAO Gold Maduro the other night that was great. I'm also a fan of Acid by Drew Estates. I've only had the Blondie and Kuba Kuba so far.

Also, my son didn't get named Tot legally, but inhereted the nickname. It only seemed right. The name did stem from the Ron White stand up and an old coworker dubbed me Tater. Its sad because I have people who I work with who don't know my real name.

Tats-
Make sure you separate those Kahlua's and the infused Acid's/Drew Estates in a different humidor from the "regular" cigars.

My first real cigar was a RyJ. Intially I focused on that line as I explored cigars. Over time I realized there were so many brands out there; most of which I had never heard of. I did what you're doing, went for samplers and before I knew it I had many options in the humi to smoke.

I recommend keeping a log of sorts for the cigars you smoke. It's an easy way to see what types of characteristics you enjoy the most and simplifies your selections a bit when at the B&M.

I've had a few of the CAO Brazilia. Very good smoke, rich in flavor. I haven't had the Gold Maduro yet, but the regular Gold was very smooth and buttery, also a good smoke.

Red, according to Kevin's response to my PM he's really not that fond of being PM'd. Who knew?

+1
You don't want to taint your non flavored cigars.

Reminds me of my Navy days. We had a young guy in our section named David West. We immediately dubbed him Jerry (for Jerry West). About 9 months later he called in to say check out on leave and his Chief Petty Officer didn't know who David West was. He had to say "You know, Jerry".

Guess you had to be there...

Welcome Tater!!

Sounds like a "PM Kevin Day" is needed. That way he only gets PM'd once a year (or month ). I'm sure he'd really appreciate this.

I think everyone gets into one brand or other for some time, especially when new to cigars. My current fix is for Cubao but overall, I can't get enough Padrons

Hmmm... funny that a day after I make the joke about PMing Kevin, I all of a sudden get subscribed to ten threads and I'm getting a dozen emails everytime someone posts something on those threads...
