Hoppy Beers Do NOT Go Well With Cigars

Last night I was sitting in my smoking parlor enjoying a Cuesta-Rey Centro Fino Sungrown and a glass of Beck's Oktoberfest lager (not too bad, really). Then, the urge came upon me to smoke yet ANOTHER cigar, so I selected a CAO Gold Maduro. I had drained my Oktoberfest(s) and thought I'd switch it up and went with a Goose Island Harvest Ale. The Goose Island Harvest Ale is something I look forward too all summer. It has a crisp and refreshing citrus hoppiness, not over the top.

Wow, was that beer WRETCHED with a cigar.

The GI produced a weird slimy mouthfeel and a GHASTLY flavor unlike anything I have ever tasted. I put the GI back in the fridge and selected another Oktoberfest, finished up my smoke, and went to bed.

I awoke around 2:00AM to tinkle and good LORD did I have a foul taste in my mouth. Like I'd licked the inside of my butt-can and then the bottom of a hamster cage. I brushed my teeth and gargled with mouthwash and STILL have this foul taste this morning.

YUCK.

AVOID.

May have something to do with the meal you ate before drinking and smoking. Just a thought.

A baked potato?

That'll do it everytime! J/K

You think the beer may have been bad? Can't say I've ever had such a bad aftertaste after any combination but then again I'm not much for a hoppy beer.

No. I drank one or two BEFORE I even started smoking.

With my baked potato.

It was just a terrible, terrible combination.

Or maybe I was just completely hammered up and even more full of shit than usual?

I have never had that problem either. Usually I try to pick a beer that won't over power the cigar, so I won't drink a dark lager with a mild conny.
Dopplebock is fairly hoppy and it goes perfect with most maddys. Plus usually I drink a bourbon with a beer chaser when I smoke, bourbon really goes well with a good cigar.

I stick to liquor with cigars. I really enjoy Maduros with sweet liquors (like my Rocky Mountain Mother F**ker drink). Rum & Amaretto mixed drinks are my favorites.

Sorry I confused hoppy with Malty. I really never had a very hoppy beer. I usually stick to dark lagers, or Weisse beers. Although I do enjoy a Heiny Light with a cigar also.

Not a big fan of hoppy beers myself, so I'm sure I wouldn't care for them with a cigar. More of a fan of stouts and such myself.

I've had several IPA's with many different cigars and have also experience the "bad combination" on a few...but certainly not all combos were bad...I prefer more of a stout with a cigar than any other beer type.
