Obama Smokes? Maybe there's hope?

This is a discussion on Obama Smokes? Maybe there's hope? within the General Cigar Discussion forums, part of the The Cigar Lounges at Puff category; I'm not really looking for a political discussion, but I'll probably get one anyway. I just happened to find this ...

Obama Smokes? Maybe there's hope?

I'm not really looking for a political discussion, but I'll probably get one anyway.

I just happened to find this interesting post this morning.

It is even more interesting that it comes from a non-smoker defending smoker's rights. It's a short 1 minute read.

Who knows, maybe Obama will make the cover of CA. From my discussions, most, if not all of the cigar industry executives voted Republican because of the SCHIPS bill, if not other reasons as well.

Maybe there is some hope for smokers anyway. Check out this post and let me know what you think.

he quit smoking cigarettes but not cigars.

"I was outside late at night. I confess I was smoking a cigar; my wife doesn't let me smoke inside," Obama said

From the FSS newsletter for what that's worth

Oh, that's good then. He'll veto the SCHIP legislation, then?!

Like he will EVER buy a cigar. Thats like "The Arnold" who has a stockpile of Cubans in his office in Sacramento. 1st, you think he bought them? 2nd, do you think he cares they are illegal?

Listen, and i'll catch some hell for this, But Obama does come off as a "regular guy" at times. Wife, kids, has a vice in smoking cigs/cigars, plays sports, watches sports, able to BS and crack some jokes. The guy at least has some personality, something the oval office has been lacking for 8 years.

I just hope and pray that Obama realizes the US has about 5 million cigar smokers, and smoking a cigar is part of our "American Dream."

we will have to keep up our fight on SCHIP, but on the other side Obama seems more open to lifting the Cuban embargo as well as allowing travel there.

Traditional republicans will hate that but that would score major points with me if he does.

If he can keep the cigar tax under $0.75 per stick AND lift the embargo, i'd be really happy.

Let's come to grips that the cigar tax is going to go up quite a bit.

If the cigar tax goes up but he manages to keep gas prices where they are at and lifts the embargo and travel ban I'd be very very happy.

yeah, but can you imaging how much we'll be paying for certified CCs if the ban is lifted? ouch!

If he does that (barring any 'major' screw ups in other areas) I can promise him my vote for re-election.

Put it this way, Habanos SA will be the cigar version of De Beers. De Beers controls 75% of the diamonds that are distributed around the world. De Beers holds back distribution of diamonds in order to keep the price up. Just like Arab Oil as well.

Habanos SA will do the SAME THING. Limited amount of distribution to the US in order to keep the price UP.

HOWEVER, this should bring down the price of some of the better Non-Cuban cigars. If cubans get unleashed on the market, the ultra premiums are the ones that will suffer, so price is the 1st way to combat competition.
